Yeah, I know how unlikely it is that anybody would care, but this helps me clearing my thoughts...

Sooo, I've finally come to a decision re: measuring time before the rising of the Moon and the Sun. I decided that the New Year of the Dark Elves would fall onto one of the 4 annual stellar solsctices (yep, I know the term is a contradiction in itself, but what can I do), when a certain star (Borgil) would rise before Menelvagor, marking the annual meteor shower seen above their hidden city. They will have other names, of course, names in Primitive Elvish, but that wouldn't matter.

What truly matters, is that I gave the Dark Elves an ancient prophecy, based loosely on the Second Prophecy of Mandos, which will serve as his motivation to leave Ramadur and interact with other Elves, for the first time since Melkor has been chained. Because Menelvagor, or Telumehtar, or Taimondo, or whatever else he might be called, was supposed to have a sword-brother among Elves (namely Ingil, Ingwë's son), and together they were supposed to wear off Melkor's evil.

Later the Second Prophecy underwent changes that brought Túrin Turambar into the picture instead of Ingil; but since I hate that guy with the passion of a thousand burning sons, I took the creative liberty to return to the original version. With compliments to the Canon Police and suggestions where they could go and what they could do with themselves.

Other than that, I'm sick like a dog again. Stomach flu is so not fun!

I have managed to flesh out the motivation of my main protagonist - the one that would make him leave the Hidden City of the Moriquendi, and that would, in the end, lead to his great tragedy and his downfall.

Now I have a few nasty astronomical problems to figure out - particularly the question how on Earth did the Elves actually measure time with only the stars as their guides and spending literally Ages in permanent twilight.

I mean, we know that in Valinor the changing of the Light of the Two Trees was the means by which they did it, but back in Middle-earth, that wasn't an option. Too bad that I don't know a thing about stars, their rising and stuff, and haven't got the faintest idea how to reasearch it. *sighs*

Edit:: I've managed to hunt down some of Prof. Christine Larsen's articles about the astronomy of Middle-earth and the likely identification of stars and stellar consternations in Tolkien's work, but it's still far from enough. I might consider contacting her; after all, we did exchange a few emails, back in my early years on the Net.

Now, as I said, the main character is an inhabitant of my Dark Elf city, first featuring (the city, not the character) in The Vault of the Dead, posted in its entirety to [livejournal.com profile] edhellondawards. Details and question behind the tag.

SPOILER ALERT!

Anyway, I know this is a bit confusing, so feel free to ask questions. I'll screen them - and my answers - so that the casual reader won't learn anything that should not be revealed at this time.

No, I'm not talking about [livejournal.com profile] lethe_lloyd's epic. This is the working title of a future story that won't leave me alone. As if I wouldn't have enough unfinished WIPs as it is. *sighs*

In any case, this is a First Age story, which takes place, partially at least, in my Moriquendi city from "The Vault of the Dead". My plot ideas are vague to nonexistent - all I know is who the main charactes are (mostly canonical ones, but with mighty twists), what the basic situation is (also canonical, also with a mighty twist) and what the outcome will be (which is completely canonical, without much of a twist, if any).

My main problem is how to reconcile canon events and canon timeline with my story idea - there seem to be some chronological impossibilities which I'd like to circumvent without declaring the whole thing completely AU. Well, it is one, considering the main character and its background and a lot of other things, but not the kind of AU that would go against canon in its entirety.

I'd be very happy if I could discuss the individual problems with people who are also interested in First Age Elves. I won't set a filter on this topic, because I'd like to allow even casual visitors to share their opinions. However, the comments will be screened, because I don't want to give away anything in advance.

First question(s) will be in future posts. This is simply an announcement.
