Now, as I said, the main character is an inhabitant of my Dark Elf city, first featuring (the city, not the character) in The Vault of the Dead, posted in its entirety to
edhellondawards. Details and question behind the tag.
SPOILER ALERT!
It is established, that the city of the Dark Elves was built shortly after the sundering ot the Elves, when lots of them went to the Blessed Realm, while some of them chose to remain in Middle-earth. So far, so good. My protagonist - the canon character with the mighty twist - was born in this city and lived there, until the protection of the renegade Valar Ómar and Akairis for an indefinite time. Again, no problem here.
The problems begin when he moves out of the city and wanders westward to visit his sundered kin in Doriath. I just can't find the right canonical date for him to do so.
The canon facts are:
- He lives for a while in Doriath, in a certain forest.
- He moves out when the Girdle of Melian (for the non-Silmficcers among us: a magical ring of enchantment) is set abouot Doriath.
- The Girdle is set as soon as Thingol (King of Doriath) and his Queen Melian (one of the Maiar, the lesser angelic beings) learn about the return of Morgoth (the evil dude) to Middle-earth.
Originally, I wanted my main protagonist to move out of the hidden Dark Elf city upon the arrival of Salmar, the third renegade Vala, who brings the news about the return of the Noldor to Middle-earth and also brings a survivor of the Kindslaying of Alqualondë with him.
The problems with this scenario are:
- If my protagonist leaves after Salmar's arrival, this doesn't let him time to live for some time in the Doriathrim forests first. Which he, unfortunately, canonically did.
- Also, Salmar would need quite some time to reach the Dark Elf city. As a renegade Vala, he has incarnated permanently, which lessened his powers considerably, meaning that he no longer can simply "think" himself from Alqualondë to the Dark Elf city, not to mention take a shocked and potentially injured survivor with him. The Dakr Elf city is in the White Mountains, which is frigging far away from the seashore, even in the Third Age. In the First Age, there would also be the entire Beleriand and the Blue Mountains lying between them.
- Even though we are not told how long the Long Night actually lasted, Melian, due to his powers could have learned about Morgoth's return already while the Kinslaying was still taking place in Alqualondë. Which means that the Girdle might have been set before even Fëanor and his followers would have landed in Middle-earth.
Anyway, I know this is a bit confusing, so feel free to ask questions. I'll screen them - and my answers - so that the casual reader won't learn anything that should not be revealed at this time.
