... should be forbidden. No, seriously. Let me list today's endless 'joys' to prove it.

The long list of woes )

After the big cleaning, and things were barely back in their place, my young colleague Adrienne called to ask me a favour. Long story short, she forgot a bag with all the scripts for our school's cultural event in a supermarket, where she bought some rolls for a kid who nearly topped over because of an empty stomach. She had to take the kids back to school, where they still had lessons (including her), but I live two corners away from this particular supermarket, so I went to fetch the bag for her, of course. Fortunately, it was still there.

When I had to get dressed anyway, I decided to do the grocery shopping and take out the selective rubbish in one fell sweep. That way I won't have to go to the supermarket (a different one) tomorrow and can sleep in. I bought a Vienetta ice cream cake to compensate us both for our pains. I think we deserved it.
wiseheart: (Default)
Which can be because of serious sleep deprivation. My nights are seldom longer than 6 hours, and in the last three days I didn't manage to take my usual afternoon nap. I'll try to do better from now on!

That said, it was a relatively quiet day. In the morning, even before Mum would get up, I quickly iced my cinnamon-and-nougat cookies and put them out on the balcony, so that the icing could harden out. By the time we had gone through our morning routine, the cookies were ready to be boxed. Yay! Two sorts done, four to six more to go. But I won't bake again until next week - or, at the earliest time, till Sunday.

After breakfast I had to clean out the lowest shelf of the pantry cupboard (literally, as it serves as a sorry excuse for an actual pantry in the kitchen), to sort my packages of flour by their 'best before' date. The same with cans of pineapple, mango, pureed tomatoes, green peas and sweet corn. Now I have a general idea what we have in reserve and what has to be used up first.

Writing-wise it was a good day, too. I've dug out my Enterprise DVDs and re-watched "Rogue Planet", thus getting the necessary details for the description I needed to write. My total is almost two full pages, which is fantastic progress, after the dry spell of recent days.

No actual crafting was done today, but I finally managed to take a halfway decent picture of my little felt box (after three failed attempts). You know, the one that started as a failed pincushion and got repurposed. It still isn't entirely finished (I need to fix the front loop), but I think it looks nice enough.

Little gift box.jpg

For lunch I did some express cooking: Tütensuppe (10 minutes), fried fish fingers (another 10 minutes) parsley potatoes (about 12 minutes, since the potatoes were boiling while I did the rest of the dishes). I sliced some cucumbers in lieu of a salad, and that was basically it. But Mum liked it, and I didn't have to waste half my day in the kitchen.

After lunch we went for a walk with Mum, and after that I talked to some friends on the phone (3 out of 5 actually answered the phone, which counts as a good percentage). So yeah, it was a good day. I'm just falling asleep on my feet every ten minutes. Every five minutes if I sit down. *g*
wiseheart: (Default)
Sorry for yesterday's whingefeast, folks. This hamster wheel that has been my life in the last 4+ years has gotten to me. But today I finally got to bake that date and walnut bread, and I gave the pincushion another try - it might actually work out this time, although it isn't finished yet - and my friend Evie called, so I managed to crawl out of the hole. Let's hope I won't fall back any time soon. *fingers crossed*
wiseheart: (Default)
Today we had 14°C, so I decided that the time has come to take Mum out of the house. I bought her some leggings, so with those and a light jacket we dared the street in front of the house. We've made half the trip to the corner café; considering that she wasn't out for over two months, it was impressive progress. Our goal is to make it to the café again - even though they have raised the prices to unreasonable heights. *g*

Not much else happened. I've put the covering on the ring book meant for the recipe collection, wrote nearly two pages (yay!), made a spanakopita-for-dummies for dinner and tried to find the candle-decorating kit I had bought at least a decade ago at the "Flying Tiger" shop. I failed. So I'll have to think of a different method to decorate those Easter candles. They are too tiny to use wax plates, so I might turn to stickers instead. I'm not happy. I so wanted to give that kit a try!

In the afternoon I spent an hour and some to re-read an old Merlin fic of mine and found that I still liked it. Alas, few other people shared my opinion. But again, I usually write stuff because I rarely find stories I'd personally like, so I shouldn't be surprised, right?

Also, I finally managed to reach my friend Evie via phone, which was nice. Social life is crumbling away at an alarming speed.
wiseheart: (Default)
No, not that TARDIS. I mean the highly specific flow of time. People think that just because I'm retired, I'd have all the time on Earth. Well... not quite.

Today I had to go to Lidl in a great haste, as we've all but run out of bread, milk and fruits and I needed to get home before the postwoman would bring Mum's pension. One needs bread and milk for breakfast, after all (well, we need fruit, too), and we wanted to have breakfast before Mum would have to deal with the financial part of like. In this case it meant to count the money several times (just to be on the safe side), changing big notes (that she got) to small ones of equal value (which I had), then count everything again several times, as the notes tend to stick together, and that complicates things. That process about take care of the whole morning.

We still had leftovers, so I didn't have to actually cook. I just made a salad to the remains of pulled pork and mashed potatoes, and lunch was really good. But barely had we finished, I had to leave again, this time to return the empty bottles to that automated... thing, so that we'd get the money back. (Pfand in German, no idea what it's called in English and too tired to look up, sorry).

I left at 3pm and went to school to pick up the eggs I'd ordered (one young colleague managed to reorganize the egg business and I'm one of the few regular clients) and pay for them. Choir practice started at 4.30pm and lasted till 6.30. By that time I was fairly dead on my feet. Fortunately, my friend Eenie gave me the usual lift, so at least I didn't have to drag my shopping bags home by bus. The best part of choir practice was that Erica (another retired colleague) was on Grandma duty and decided to bring her 1.5 year old granddaughter with her. The kid is extremely cute, and she was very patient. She only started protesting against all those old women singing her ears off after an hour and a half. *g*

So, this was another day when time flew by extremely fast. No me-time was included, unless a twenty-minute nap counts. But at least if was full of accomplishments.
wiseheart: (Default)
Still exhausting, but at least more fun. It did include some me-time, after all.

So, we had laundry day and Mum insisted on ironing the starched doilies and doing the washing-up two or three times (she can't resist when she sees as much as a coffee cup in the kitchen sink), but it wasn't all that bad. I managed to finish one lavender sachet and stitched on the felt appliqué on another one. This is a project with a December deadline, so I can take my time.

I also managed to do some writing that I've been pushing farther and farther in front of me for weeks. It's a necessary but somewhat boring part, where I try to deliver a massive infodump in a manner that wouldn't cause any potential readers to fall asleep. Still not sure I've manage it, but at least I have a draft now.

Then I baked a... well, a traybake perhaps, using ready-made puff pastry, custard powder and some canned peaches that needed to be eaten before reaching their BBF date. Sadly, I managed to bake the pastry too dark and to nearly burn the custard, but the outcome was still yummy, so I declare that a success. *g*

In the meantime Louise Sr. (the washing machine) has rune her cycle, so I had to hang up the washing. Then we watched two consecutive episodes of "Salvage Hunters - The Restorers", after which I fell asleep for an hour. Clearly, that was badly needed.

I then switched my desktop PC on to type up some more of Chapter 2 of EMV III, but my friend Evie called right after I had begun, so I didn't get the whole thing done, despite not being much left. But I don't mind; talking to a friend is always lovely. The transcribing can be finished tomorrow.
wiseheart: (Default)
... but I've forgotten what it was. Getting old is no fun. *sigh*

Anyway, today was quite busy again. It started with washing my hair, which is only a 15-minute affair and yet I need serious persuasion (from myself) to do it. No idea why.

I cooked Mary Berry's chicken pasta bake for two or three days, using the second package of fresh Spätzle bought at Lidl last week. It is something we both love, it doesn't require much work, and as I didn't know whether the insurance lady planned to come on tomorrow or the day after, I wanted to have two cooking-free days, just in case.

It turned out she'll only come on Monday (allegedly; I hope she does turn up), so I'll use tomorrow morning to deal with some issues outside the house (like fetching Mum's medicine and a visit to Telekom - again) and Friday to do half the cleaning, namely kitchen, bath, loo and perhaps the balcony, too. As there's still no new cleaning lady looming on the horizon, I have to pace the cleaning carefully.

Ellie and Lola, two of the adult elephants, are about to leave the herd as well. They're going to the grandsons of my friend Elise (both approx. two years old), so they'll have a very good home. That leaves Flora (formerly Fleur) with us for the time being; and Fanny, of course, but Fanny belongs to Mum and will stay premanently.

On the crafting front I've cut out the parts, selected the appliqués and even did a bit of sewing on twelve future lavender sachets. This is going to be a long, ongoing project on which I'll be working on and off in small steps. They are no in the shape where I can set them aside if something bigger or more urgent comes up and then pick them up again.

Mum decided that today was the day when a bunch of crocheted doilies (made by Grandma, back before she'd lose most of her eyesight, that is in the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s) needed to be washed and starched. So we did that today. With that and the crafty preparations, the afternoon was basically over; I didn't even get to take a nap today. :(
wiseheart: (Default)
... for a while anyway. So, behold Lola:

Lola the elephant.jpg

Mum voted for the red flower eyes, and she was right: they look good. In exchange, the back of poor Lola is a bit... well, wavy, no idea why, but I think she's cute nonetheless.

Today was a lazy day. Aside from Mum's weekly shower (which got postponed because the cleaning frenzy on Friday), I only did a bit of writing and the finishing touches on Lola. Took two naps of considerable length, talked to my friend Evie on the phone - and nothing much beyond that, honestly. Tomorrow will be busy again, so it felt good to be a bit lazy.
wiseheart: (Default)
1. I overslept by 45 minutes, having forgotten to set my alarm. So much about getting up half an hour earlier to put my dough together.

2. I did put my dough together for my Spekulaas-flavoured cookies, as they needed at least an hour in the fridge. In the meantime:

3. I made the carrot soup and...

4. ...put together the salad and boiled the potatoes for lunch.

5. I baked the cookies just in time for my friend Elise (who came by to bring me a button-operated phone that I might be able to use) to sample them. She approved.

6. I then finished making lunch (pulled pork from Lidl baked in the oven, with aforementioned salad and Petersilkartoffel, if anyone wants to know), after which...

7. ... we took out the rubbish, so that Mum would get a bit of moving around, too. By then it was over 4pm, Mum then took a nap and I watched two episodes of Salvage Hunter - The Restorers, while working on Lola the elephant in the ad breaks. The programme ended at 6pm, after which I rested a bit with my crossword puzzles, until it was time for supper, and now here I am.

It was a really, really busy day, with - sadly - no writing so far (and unlikely that it would happen later). But tomorrow I don't have anything to do beyond the usual Mum duties, so I might even get a bit of time for myself. *fingers crossed*

Phone drama

Feb. 3rd, 2025 09:14 pm
wiseheart: (Default)
My very first, 16+-year-old mobile phone died on me today. I went to Telekom to have my account modified, and after the nice young man put in the new Sim card, the phone couldn't be switched on again. It's most likely the on/off button that is broken (I couldn't really use it for at least half a year, so the phone had been on continually), and while it's just such a small part, no-one has the ersatz parts or knows how to mend it anymore. Granted, the battery had been weakening for some time, too, but... well, it can't be helped. I'm really sad, though. That phone had gone through so much with me, and I really loved it.

So, right now the Sim card resides in Mum's old phone (inherited from H. about four years ago), until I can get myself a newer model. Also a button-operated one, mind you, I prefer those for simple phone calls. Not to mention that if Mum got to the hospital again (which I hope to avoid in the future, but one can never know) she won't be able to deal with my way-too-smart phone, so yeah. Fortunately, my friend Elise, whom I asked where to find such an old-fashioned phone, told me that she had bought one for her father who didn't like it and never used it. So, she'll bring me the phone next week, we'll try it out, and if it works for me, I'll buy it off her. It would spare me the necessity of running all over town like a headless chicken and trying to find one.

The phone drama cost me half the day. Fortunately, we had cooked in advance yesterday, so no slave labour was necessary. I started on the third elephant instead, mostly to calm down a bit ([livejournal.com profile] elwenlj would agree that hand-sewing is very good for that) and even finished it to about 80 per cent. She's very... floral, and I think I'll call her Ellie (very original, I know). I've got more of the same fabric (Granny's old gown) to make a similar one. Then I'll probably declare the elephant herd complete.

I also talked to my friend Evie in the evening. That was very soothing for my nerves, too. Friends are a gift one can't value enough.
wiseheart: (Default)
... now has a second inhabitant. I've finished the new toy today. I think I'll call her Fleur, as she's been made of a floral-patterned fabric. I seriously consider making a third one of Grandma's old gown; it has such bold, bright colours. Picture is coming up, assuming we'll have enough light tomorrow for my way too smart phone (or the new iPad) to cooperate.

Not much else happened today. Mum and I collaborated at cooking, with me peeling and chopping the potatoes and the Coctailwürstchenfor the potato goulash, commonly known as potato paprikash in Hungary and Mum doing the actual cooking afterwards. This is for tomorrow and the day after when I'll be doing other things. Today, we had apple compote and leftover Maronenkuchen for lunch. And that on a Sunday! Grandma would be scandalized. *g*

I then talked to H. on the phone (grandchildren are ill again) as well as to my friend Eenie, whose daughter has just returned from Spain where she had studied for one semester. We watched the GBBO - The Professionals, and now it's evening again. If I got the evil wizard that arranged for the days to become so short I'll do terrible things to them!
wiseheart: (Default)
So, I went to my bank today in the hope that the lady clerk will have an idea how to deal with the "paying for LJ" problem. Well, she had not. The only credit cards our banks deal with are Visa and Mastercard, and those don't work with LJ, unless they have been issued by Russian banks, which my card has not. She was also not familiar with the YooMoney payment service, and the computers in the bank underlie serious restrictions, due to data protecting (with which I whole-heartedly agree), so we couldn't check out the link LJ Support had sent me.

So, just for the record: has anyone managed to renew their paid account? And if yes, how did you do it? I still have a month to figure out a way, but I have no idea what to do. :( Help, please?

In other news, the two rag dolls have gone to their new home. My friend and ex-colleague was over the moon, she loved them so much, and didn't mind that they are (more than a bit) oddly shaped. So, that's one tiny piece of success for the day. One has to count one's blessings.

I've also made Mum's birthday cake: a chestnut one, with chocolate icing and decorated with mini marshmallows. We haven't cut it yet, as the big day is tomorrow, but she approved of it.

More social life was had as I talked on the phone to two more former colleagues; all in all, it was a good day.
wiseheart: (Default)
Isn't she cute? :)

Fáni.jpg

I worked on her most of the morning and half the afternoon, and now she's finished. Yay! My confidence about my sewing abilities has returned.

Other than that, I did the grocery shopping, called the lady clerk in the bank and got myself an appointment for Wednesday in the hope that she can actually do something re: the LJ payment, talked to my friend and ex-colleague Ilonka who happily accepted both rag dolls in behalf of her grandchildren (two years and half a year olds), got a call from my young friend and ex-colleague Adrienne and took a well-deserved nap. All in all, a good day.

Oh, and Mum spoke with our janitor who might or might not get us a new cleaning lady. It depends if the candidate can take on another cleaning job. *fingers crossed*
wiseheart: (Default)
... the doll disaster was marked by a defiant attempt to prove myself that I can still sew. In this spirit I cut out the necessary parts for a toy elephant - a fairly simple pattern that I hope I'll be able to finish in a couple of days. *fingers crossed*

I also baked Mum's favourite savoury scones that nearly ended in a disaster, too, as I only realized in the last moment that I forgot the butter (well, margarine). Fortunately, I could still add it in time, and the yummy, cheesy things turned out every bit as well as always.

Other than that, I was a bit out of sorts all day. We had laundry day and watched some telly, but I felt so tired all the time I had to lie down three frigging times! Frayed nerves, most likely. And I had such ambitious plans for today, regarding of decluttering and transcribing and the likes... nothing of it happened. :(

At least I got a phone call from a former colleague of mine (now retired like myself), who noticed that I haven't been to choir practice twice in a row and called to see if I was okay. That was really nice of her. Sometimes I get the feeling that if I didn't call people I wouldn't get to speak to any living thing for weeks. Phone calls like this prove me wrong from time to time, and that does my poor soul good.

Okay, stopping the self-pitying feast now because it's pathetic.
wiseheart: (Default)
And no, I don't mean them darkening early in winter. Actually, we have no light at least an hour longer than, say, in early December. But the usable hours fly by with such a frightening speed - how is it Thursday evening again?

Of course, the fact that I was on a shopping tour around midday might have played a role today. I was only away for a little longer than two hours, but that meant the day was broken into two fairly short parts, with and even shorter break in the middle. Granted, I could have gone in the early morning... theoretically. But getting up early when you're staying up deep into the night isn't easy. Even so, with barely six hours of sleep I was befuddled all day, despite a short nap in the afternoon.

In any case, I worked a bit on the girl doll's dress. It consist of two identical panels (well, as identical as I'm capable of making any two things, which is not much), and I've almost finished one of those. Whether it will be the front panel or the back one depends on which of the two will turn out prettier - that one will go front. Yeah, it's all about appearances. *g*

I've also started typing up Chapter 4 of EMV II, which is good. The story has only five chapters, so I actually might finish transcribing it to the computer in a reasonably short time. *fingers crossed* When that's done, I might try bringing up enough brainpower to continue EMV III. I'm at a point where I have to describe a duel between Malcolm Reed and a female Klingon warrior, and that would need the right mindset... and a lot more sleep. We'll see.

Social and family life was represented by two phone calls, one to a colleague who's managed to break her leg (again) and one to H. and the set of grandchildren who live in the same house. So, it was a fairly busy day, but tomorrow I attempt to do more things for myself.
wiseheart: (Default)
... and the lack of it can ruin your day. I had errands to run in the morning, and they were of a nature that I had to start them around noon. Considering the fact that Mum usually gets up after 9am and doing her morning routine can take as long as 40-50 minutes, not much of the morning was left. Definitely not enough to start anything of importance. Especially as we usually have a fairly late brunch because of my intermittent fasting routine.

I left shortly after noon and got home around half past three in the afternoon. We then had lunch - canned pumpkin cream soup and Flammkuchen that I had bought on my way home, so at least I didn't have to cook - watched some telly, took our afternoon nap (fairly late that one, too), Mum had phone calls from her friends, and with that the day was basically over.

Lolek the rag doll was a great success with my (ex-)colleagues and the kids at Erna's crafting workshop (I briefly visited her at school to help me learn more about my way too smart phone). I think I'll work tomorrow on the girl doll before I'd give his cap a try. Some of the girl doll's parts are still half-finished and don't require much brainpower to complete, so that will be both relaxing and productive.
wiseheart: (Default)
He still doesn't have his cap, as I haven't managed to wrap my tired old brain around the intimidatingly complicated process of making one, but I thought I'd post a pic, just so that you all can decide whether he resembles a monkey or not. *g*

Here we go:

Rag doll Lolka.jpg

He is a funny little guy with lots of beginner's mistakes in the making (notice the weird-looking chin and the disproportioned head and limbs) but considering that I've never used this pattern before, I find the results acceptable. Mum loves him to pieces, but Mum is biased, of course.

Otherwise it was a mundane day, full of household activities: laundry day, cooking (I did the peeling and chopping, Mum did the actual cooking) and so on. We took naps, watched "Salvage Hunters", I talked to two different friends on the phone, and that was it. Tomorrow it will be outside errands again, but for now I'm glad I can be inside the house.
wiseheart: (Default)
Starting with the chiropodist visit, then the big scare with Mum, and now our latest cleaning lady has performed the disappearing act on us, too. I hope that nothing bad happened to her, that would be horrible for her two little girls. I've tried repeatedly to reach her on the phone but so far no success.

So I had to do all the cleaning by myself on a single day. Usually, I do this in several smaller parts when I know I wouldn't have any help, but I talked to the cleaning lady two days ago and she assured me that she would come. So I prepared the flat for a two-men (or rather two-women) act and had to do everything on the same day, which sucks.

Our janitor was here to take a look at the water tap in the bathroom and the water tank in the look both of which are showing signs of breaking down. He promised to buy the ersatz parts tomorrow and fix them. *fingers crossed*

No cooking, crafting or writing was done today. I talked to H., my friend Evie and another (ex-)colleague on the phone; the latter has managed to break a leg (again) and needed surgery to fix the bone, the poor thing. She had barely got rid of the screws in her other leg bone and now this. We're definitely getting older.

Mum continues getting better. She keeps complaining that she feels weak like a kitten, but she sneaked out into the kitchen to do the washing-up and did a great deal of packing in the living room, both before and after the big cleaning, so I'm cautiously optimistic. She also has her appetite back, which is always a good sign.

Better now

As I mentioned in the comments to yesterday's entry, Mum is up and hobbling again. She managed to get to the loo with the help of her walking frame and did a great deal of rearranging the knick-knacks, so that the cleaning lady can work properly tomorrow. We'll still use the console for the night, but during the day she's pretty much back to her usual mobility - well, almost. She's a great deal more cautious now, and I'm still a bit nervous, but we manage.
Not much else was done. I knitted about another centimetre on the rag doll's scarf, and solved half a crossword puzzle, but didn't have the strength for anything else, after having rearranged the entire flat for tomorrow's cleaning frenzy. I tried to take an extended nap in the afternoon, but was too tired to actually fall asleep for longer than half an hour, so I gave up on it. H. and Mum's friends called to ask how she's doing, which was nice, and I talked to my friend Eenie on the phone.

Tomorrow we'll have an early start as the cleaning lady is supposed to show up at 8am. We'll see (and hope that she does).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
dear [livejournal.com profile] artemis10002000!!!

I hope you had a lovely day, with good food, nice birthday gifts and peace all around. Here, have some virtual calories (they are inside the flowers):

Edina Rafaello csokra 2.JPG

The good news over here are that I've actually managed to make the new customer gateway work - for the time being anyway. Let's hope this wasn't the only time. *fingers crossed* At least I could download and print out the official info about the (moderate) rise of my old age pension.

Not much else happened today. I'm utterly exhausted, but that's probably coming from the frayed nerves. All this struggle with both the virtual stuff and the rag doll was simply too much. My nerves were never particularly resistant, and the older I get the easier do I lose them. *sigh*
