... should be forbidden. No, seriously. Let me list today's endless 'joys' to prove it.

I got up (after 5 hours of sleep) a good hour earlier than usual, because the cleaning lady was supposed to arrive between 9am and 10am and I still had some preparations to make.

Cleaning lady phoned around 9am, very apologetically, that she won't be able to arrive any earlier than between 11am and 12am. You can imagine my 'delight' about that fact - the flat looked like a refugee camp, with half the furniture on the corridor, the rest piled on each other, so that she could do the cleaning... well, I'm sure you can imagine it.

I realized that with the change in schedule I'd probably still be carrying stuff back to its appointed place right now. So I made a decision and cleaned the balcony on my own. And carried the things that belong to there back to their place. And a few other things that actually belong to the bedrooms and the kitchen, so that they wouldn't block everyone's way on the corridor. Where it theoretically isn't allowed to keep anything because of fire security reasons or whatever it's called in English.

So, I'd finished the balcony, scrubbed the kitchen hearth and the loo by the time the cleaning lady finally deigned to arrive. Unlike last time, she was fairly out of sorts today; neither Mum nor I were satisfied with her work. And the cherry on top was that she apparently doesn't count her hourly wage by finished work hours. No, when one hour is over, the count starts anew, even if she only works 20 more minutes. Like today. So, we paid her the same sum of money as two weeks ago, even though I was the one who did half the work - the worse half of it. I was mildly outraged.

Mum made another appointment with her for the cleaning of the balcony windows, which is overdue but which I can't do because I get dizzy on a ladder. But after that we simply won't call her anymore. We're both fed up with unreliable people who try to cheat on us.

Of course, just ten minutes before the cleaning lady’s arrival our internet connection broke down. I spent roughly 20 minutes at the phone with the Vodafone customer sevice lady who guided me throug resetting my modem - it was positively terrifying for a techno-wheenie like me.

After the big cleaning, and things were barely back in their place, my young colleague Adrienne called to ask me a favour. Long story short, she forgot a bag with all the scripts for our school's cultural event in a supermarket, where she bought some rolls for a kid who nearly topped over because of an empty stomach. She had to take the kids back to school, where they still had lessons (including her), but I live two corners away from this particular supermarket, so I went to fetch the bag for her, of course. Fortunately, it was still there.

When I had to get dressed anyway, I decided to do the grocery shopping and take out the selective rubbish in one fell sweep. That way I won't have to go to the supermarket (a different one) tomorrow and can sleep in. I bought a Vienetta ice cream cake to compensate us both for our pains. I think we deserved it.

I think many cleaners assume that if they're cleaning for 'old ladies' they will be doing a little bit of dusting, run the vacuum in the high traffic areas, and leave plenty of time to pocket any stray cash they find. Yes, I am cynical.

Cynical perhaps but certainly not wrong. Of course, I'm a cynical person, too, so I've hidden all the valuables well in advance. *g*

Today´s cleaning ladies behave like divas! They clearly know that there´s not enough of them!

If I could climb a ladder without getting dizzy on the third step I'd never bother with them!

Oh wow, you've no luck at all with cleaning ladies. Cleaning is such a chore. I'm so stressed for time that I made a cleaning chart to get myself back on track. So far, I'm 5 steps ahead on some tasks and 12 behind on others. It did not help that we had another emergency room visit a few days ago. It seems to be a pattern now. A trip to the ER, a good week, and then another trip to the ER. We've had a home health nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and a home health aide helping us this past week (TG). The nurse recommended my husband for Palliative care. Apparently, it is similar to Hospice but accepts people who are not terminal, those with a complex medical condition. Not sure exactly what the requirements are, but it seems my husband meets them. It is covered by insurance, so we will both get a small amount of help and resources we did not have before. Every little bit helps.
