You are cordially invited...
Oct. 1st, 2017 07:13 pmAs in each year, I'm throwing a virtual birthday party, which starts today and ends on October 9 at midnight, sharp. The goal, as always, is to produce as many collapsing threads on as many pages as possible. You are welcome to joins, start threads, post pictures and participate on every discussion you want to.
To make the party more appealing, here are pics of the two cakes I baked for my real birthday party, which we had yesterday with a bunch of colleagues - a week too early because of school schedules.
Pineapple tart with vanilla pudding:

And a chocolate sponge cake, filled with whiskey-orange marmalade, which we bought in London about a century ago, and decorated with coconut shards:

So, I'm turning 61, soon, come and celebrate with me! Oh, and cake recipes and pictures totally count as threads, too.

Date: 2017-10-01 05:20 pm (UTC)So, what was your weekend like? Mine was fairly hectic. First, we had to work on Saturday, too (so that Christmas break could be a day longer), which is why I scheduled the party for yesterday. We live in close proximity to school, and since people were already there, they didn't have to travel across town for the party. Some of them live on the other side of it, and Budapest is a really big city.
We had 8 guests altogether and there was great fun. I made Quiche Lorraine, with mushroom fillings instead of bacon for the vegetarians among us, pancakes filled with spinach and layered like a cake, small, baked crescents filled with bacon, sour cream and grated cheese for those willing to eat meat, little bread baskets filled with a cream of tuna and cheese, topped with 1/4 coctail tomato, cheese buns and the two cakes on the pics above. Oh, and Mum made her famous salad de boeuf, but with chicken meat instead of beef. It is always a great success.
So, tell me about your weekend and what do you consider as mandatory party food!

Date: 2017-10-01 05:28 pm (UTC)I had father visiting from Wednesday till today, so my weekend was busy with family. Since I got home from taking him to the train station I have mostly just sat here with my laptop and caught up on internet things.

Date: 2017-10-01 10:57 pm (UTC)I found this image looking the most like Granny's special version, even though it is made with sponge cake, while Granny made it with some layered stuff that was similar yet much thinner and crispier:
It is also the most famous Hungarian cake.

Date: 2017-10-02 06:36 pm (UTC)We talked about hobbies and stuff during the previous virtual party, so I thought I'd ask you: has there been anything new in your lives since then that brought you joy?
Me, I've learned to make journals from the scratch, which I enjoy greatly, and it enabled me to give a lot of people small gifts they loved a lot.
What about you? A new hobby, a new love, a new pet? We hear so little from each other in these days, I'd love to catch up.

Date: 2017-10-02 06:41 pm (UTC)Did you get hooked on any new shows? Have you rediscovered old favourites?
I've discovered the series "Lucifer", and while I can't really digest everything in it, I find Tom Ellis in the starring role simply amazing. I already loved him as Tom Milligan in Doctor Who and as King Cenred in Merlin, but that was nothing compared with him as the retired Devil.
I also got back to an old favourite, namely Primeval. Unlike the first time, I realized that I like Series 4 and 5 - the revamped version with Alexander Siddig in the role of the adversary - a lot better than the earlier parts. Just FYI, my Primeval/Torchwood/Sherlock crossover (or what's written of it already) has been posted to

Date: 2017-10-03 07:03 pm (UTC)I know we do this every year, but have you read anything interesting lately? I mean real books, either printed or e-books, not fanfic. Which, to my eternal shame, I haven't. I don't even remember the last time I read something purely for delight, not something for research.
Does this make me a bad person?

Date: 2017-10-03 08:57 pm (UTC)I've been reading a lot of books recently, but I'll put things into separate comments for the sake of the numbers ;)

Date: 2017-10-03 07:08 pm (UTC)And since we are at reading anyway, have you read something interesting in any of your fandoms lately? Something that you'd recommend?
I mostly read Sherlock stories in the recent months, and Primeval and some Classic Battlestar Galactica. The most unique of them was an epic Omegaverse Sherlock story, complete with mpreg and poliamoury, but I'm not about to link it because I had some serious problems with the characterization. Fortunately, the Omegaverse part was only background (there are lots of things in that genre that put me off); if there haven't been a pregnant Mycroft, you'd have forgotten about the settings entirely. What I liked was someone trying to live with an asexual person, without making it easy in the cheesy and unbelievable "love conquers all" way.
