As in each year, I'm throwing a virtual birthday party, which starts today and ends on October 9 at midnight, sharp. The goal, as always, is to produce as many collapsing threads on as many pages as possible. You are welcome to joins, start threads, post pictures and participate on every discussion you want to.

To make the party more appealing, here are pics of the two cakes I baked for my real birthday party, which we had yesterday with a bunch of colleagues - a week too early because of school schedules.

Pineapple tart with vanilla pudding:

And a chocolate sponge cake, filled with whiskey-orange marmalade, which we bought in London about a century ago, and decorated with coconut shards:

So, I'm turning 61, soon, come and celebrate with me! Oh, and cake recipes and pictures totally count as threads, too.

Thread the first

So, what was your weekend like? Mine was fairly hectic. First, we had to work on Saturday, too (so that Christmas break could be a day longer), which is why I scheduled the party for yesterday. We live in close proximity to school, and since people were already there, they didn't have to travel across town for the party. Some of them live on the other side of it, and Budapest is a really big city.

We had 8 guests altogether and there was great fun. I made Quiche Lorraine, with mushroom fillings instead of bacon for the vegetarians among us, pancakes filled with spinach and layered like a cake, small, baked crescents filled with bacon, sour cream and grated cheese for those willing to eat meat, little bread baskets filled with a cream of tuna and cheese, topped with 1/4 coctail tomato, cheese buns and the two cakes on the pics above. Oh, and Mum made her famous salad de boeuf, but with chicken meat instead of beef. It is always a great success.

So, tell me about your weekend and what do you consider as mandatory party food!

Woah, yes, sounds like you were busy!

I had father visiting from Wednesday till today, so my weekend was busy with family. Since I got home from taking him to the train station I have mostly just sat here with my laptop and caught up on internet things.

Indeed! It's one of the great annual traditions of this place. :)

Catching up is good! Especially as you've managed to survive family once again.

How's school doing? When will you be done?

It seems amazing that a whole year has gone by since last time! But yay, party!

I was away during last week - got back Thursday evening. So this weekend has been catching up on stuff that needs to be done here, around being ill (cold/cough that is doing very well at draining my energy). So housework - and working on writing my Yuletide exchange letter.

For party food - cake! Other stuff depends on the party, but it would seem very sad not to have cake.

Completely agreed about the cake!
What will be your Yuletide goal this year?

Imagine that! And despite the fact that I don't feel a day older than 16 in the heart of my hearts, my rheumatic joints happen to disagree with me.

Yay indeed! Although it is true: the older I get, the faster time seems to go by.

Topic the second: What is your favourite cake?
Care to share with us the recipe or at least a photo?

Mostly to manage to write my assignment - I don't know if I'll manage any more as it has not been a very good year for writing for me.

It still feels like it should be about May this year - so the idea of it getting even faster is rather scary!

I know what you mean. I haven't written a word for weeks! Thank God I still can calm my conscience with the fact that I'm actually posting my old stuff to AO3, so I'm at least nominally present in a few of my fandoms. All this work- and health-related stress is poison for my inspiration.

Especially considering that I'm already as exhausted as I usually don't get until May. :(

Your birthday meal sounds lovely. My sister had her birthday yesterday. She had to work on the weekend, so she'll be having a lunch celebration on wednesday. I'll make salads for it - my only culinary successes are soups and salads. She doesn't like receiving presents, so I made a donation to Mercy Ships on her behalf.

Mine is the Dobos Cake. I never managed to make it myself, at least not the way my Granny used to make it - and never found anywhere the exact same version. I still haven't given up to bake it one day, but for that time and concentration is needed.

I found this image looking the most like Granny's special version, even though it is made with sponge cake, while Granny made it with some layered stuff that was similar yet much thinner and crispier:

It is also the most famous Hungarian cake.
