Hi folks! *waves*

Time is flying by, isn't it? It's that time of a year again - I'm getting older. In this case, I'm turning 55 on October 9, which used to be an important thing, back under the old regime. Women could retire at the age of 55 back then. So I've decided to ignore all that fantastic headway we've supposedly made towards democracy in the last two decades and enter my virtual retirement, blithley overlooking the fact that I'll have to work another 7 or 8 or only God knows how many years.

So, let's party! Last years virtual birthday party yielded 742 comments on 6 pages, which won't be easy to top, but we're good, aren't we? WE CAN DO IT! So, let's give it a try! In the recent years, it has always been great fun, so let's have fun again!

You're all cordially invited to help yourself to a slice of virtual Dobos Cake recipe - it's my absolute favourite, although I never managed to get it as good as my Garnny used to.

Cheers!

Note: The party will be closed on October 9, at midnight, sharp. Join us and have fun!

All for the noble goal, eh? *g*

It's interesting how I came to see Faramir the way Orlando Bloom looked in "Kingdom of Heaven". Okay, the dark eyes were a bit off for the character, but if you think about it, Faramir was in his late 30s during the War of the Ring...

It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it ;-)

I haven't seen "Kingdom of Heaven" (even though Dr Bashir is in it, I think, and I have a little crush on him). I found some pictures of OB online. I sort of see it, but he's a bit prettier than I imagine Faramir. And I just can't believe there's anything smart going on behind his eyes! :-D

I found the movie amazing. Gemma (again) gifted the Director's Cut upon me a couple of years ago, and there's one of the deleted scenes, in which Balian gets to see his father's house for the first time, and the sequence how he's led inside through all those huge doors, opening into beautiful oriental rooms, is simply breath-taking. Will use something like that if I ever get to write the story of Andrahar's fatehr.

Orlando is actually very good in the movie. He's matured a great deal since cardboard!Legolas and I liked the way he played Balian. I don't find then that pretty, never did, so perhaps that's why I can imagine him as Faramir. And the character he plays is actually very smart.

Siddig's character is simply fantastic, too. I think you might actually like the film.

Sid is great in everything, he's such a smashing actor. My number one choice for the Doctor. I'll keep an eye out on the film channels and see if I can catch it.

Perhaps we should start a campaign with the slogan "Sid for Twelve!

He's be scrumptious. They do seem to be casting slightly younger men these days though.

Perhaps. He'd be still great.
What's this with this youth-craziness in TV anyway? You can't see a decent character beyond 20 anymore.

It appears to be because according to the people making the programs young people won't watch tv unless they find the leads attractive and obviously old people can't be attractive! The whole thing is totally crazy, but appears to be why the doctor is getting younger and younger, as well as why all the companions are young (and at least one is female)
It seems to be part of the whole idea that all tv (films etc) has to appeal to teenagers and 20s people - so why everything has to have sex and violence and lack of intellectual depth. Except things that are put into different niches - but that mostly seems to be not-fiction stuff.
(sorry for ranting - tv annoys me so much)

Oh, I completely agree with you. I like me some more mature characters, even in sci-fi. *points at icon*

I do too - I get very tired of the fact that it appears that most people in tv shows are far too young for the qualifications and experience that they are supposed to have. Not that I mind occasional geniuses especially where it actually makes sense (eg Charlie Eppes in Numb3rs) and where they consider the impact that this will have had on the characters and those around them.

"Stargate: Universe" comes to the mind...
Although in that one, the older charcters were every bit as stupid and amoral as the younger ones.

I still haven't seen it - all that I've heard makes me very reluctant to spend any money to see if, but eventually I'll probably see it, and my expectations of it are very low.

Save your money and wait until it comes to free TV. It's really not worth it.

It does make for some pretty television, but I'd like some variety.

Still, though, he's not David Wenham *grrrrs*

David Wenham was an insult, both in his looks and his so-called acting. Plus, of course, I'd just seen an Aussie soft pr0n featuring him a week before I'd watch him in LOTR, and the only thing I could think whenever he appeared on screen was his naked arse. Which, IMO, looked a lot better than his face....

Yuk! The only thing I'd seen him in was a great little Aussie series called Sea Change, in which he was terrific. But Faramir's part was appallingly written.

Faramir

I still say that Orlando would have made a good Faramir, if more properly written. As boring and colourless as he was as Legolas, he could have been a great Faramir. And grey contacts would have looked better on him than grey ones.

Not movie!Faramir, of course, that was a bad caricature. But a heroic and yet kind-hearted book!Faramir, yes. His role as Balian had certain similarities, IMO.
