Today I headed to the Campona shopping centre, which is a somewhat bigger one and is at a distance of ten bus stops. I waited for the bus a good ten minutes, it finally came, I boarded it, and after two stops it made a detour to the Savoy Park shopping centre, where it stodd for another good ten minutes, supposedly for timetable issues. You should have heard the outcry of the old biddies about the unexpected delay! Honestly, as inconvenient as it was, one should think around the age of one hundred people would have learned manners already. Clearly, one would have been wrong.

Most people got off and tried to catch other buses. I decided to wait and came to my destination somewhat delayed but very comfortably. My first goal was the vending machine, however, because I decided that I had deserved a cappuccino, which I promptly bought. It was more price-y than the one I usually get at our local supermarket but much better, so that was okay.

Thread odyssey in boring detail )

After having solved (temporarily) the yarn problem, I went to the only newsagent's within reach that sells German crossword booklets. I need to keep my vocabulary alive, after all, and talking to H. on the phone once a week, plus watching "Richterin Barbara Salesh" alone don't do the trick. Finally, I rode the bus back, hoping there wouldn't be another detour (there wasn't), and did the rest of the shopping at the Chinese drugstore and one of the local supermarkets, respectively.

I also found the time to drop by our beloved corner café and bring Mum some of their fabulous croissants, which made her very happy. :)

... how deep cleaning half the flat (which I absolutely hate to do) seems to have cured my neck and shoulder pain - again. My theory is that the repetitive movements with the vacuum cleaner and the floor mop must have loosened the nerve that keeps getting pinched time and again. Which doesn't mean that I'm planning to scrub the dratted flat more frequently in the future, which I told Mum in no uncertain terms. She laughed her head off.

Aside from the cleaning frenzy I gave Mum her weekly shower, washed my hair, cooked lunch and fed Louise (= the washing machine), so I was properly housewife-y all day. And that on less than four hours of uninterrupted sleep - for some reason I hadn't slept well last night.

Accordingly, I sneaked in a nap after having emptied Louise; then I gave two of my friends/colleagues/choirmates phone calls, and that was basically it. At least I had some semblance of social life.

So, H. came today to wish Mum a happy birthday. Her older sister sent a message from Germany - so nice! My eldest cousin also called and promised to come next week to talk with Mum about old times. Mum was really happy with this all.

I baked Käsepogatschen (=cheesy scones) fresh in the morning. Mum loves them and can never say no to them. So we didn't have lunch, just coffee and scones. Then with H. we had champagne and scones. The whole tin of scones is gone now - not the healthiest diet, but Mum only has one birthday per year. I'll cook something sensible tomorrow.

Crafting-wise I've sewn together the ears of the elephant plushie because I could do them with a much thinner thread, which I had in the right colour. I still need to go back to the haberdashery and buy thicker grey thread, but at least I could make some modest progress.

What else? My neck and right shoulder are still acting up, but that's nothing new. I get that 80% of all times. The few days without it were a blessing but I knew the peace won't last long. *sigh*

I had plans for this day, since we postponed Mum's birthday for tomorrow. Since I didn't have to cook, either - long live leftovers! - I planned to do a few things for myself. Like a bit of crafting, a bit of writing, a bit of resting. Well, the last one actually happened, but the first two...

I started with cutting out the basic parts of an elephant plushie - only to discover that I didn't have any grey thread with which to sew them together. After having spent a small fortune on red and white thread yesterday, I'm no facing the necessity to do the same with grey thread. Why is it that one can have entire boxes of thread in various colours (which I do!) but never the only one needed at any given moment?

As for the writing part, I intended to add another scene to Chapter 18 of "Alternate Caretaker" and/or write the opening scene to Chapter 19 (the story has actually 22 written parts at the moment but 4 of them are so-called interludes, so I'm still at Chapter 18). Well... neither of those things happened. I'm brain-dead, totally unmotivated and couldn't think of a single thing that would work.:((

So we watched some crap telly, Mum happily accepted congratulatory phone calls (and one video call from H. and her immediate family), and then we took extended naps. And now I'm mourning all the time I've wasted today. *sigh*

The day started rater unspectacularly. I went to Röltex, which is a shop chain for sewing supplies, and found my much-needed red stitching thread. I promptly bought all 5 of them, plus a white one, which ruined my crafting budget, but at least I'm not in danger of running out of thread when a bunny is only half-done.

After that, I went to Lidl and did the grocery shopping. Then I made lunch - of all things ready-made, like the pork knuckles and the potato dumplings - and we rested after our late lunch and watched some telly.

In the middle of this, the intercom sounded. It turned out to be Danny, Heidi's son, who came to congratulate Mum to her birthday. He lives at Lake Balaton but came up to the capital for work-related stuff and made a detour to visit the matriarch of the family. *g*

Mum was over the Moon, of course. I was happy to see him, too; he's a nice kid, although calling him a "kid" while he's over 40 and married with two kids of his own is a bit silly. He stayed for about an hour, helped me to set the stupid mediabox so that I'll be able to watch YouTube videos on the big telly screen in the future, and made promises to get me the "Strange New Words" Star Trek series... somehow. (If he can't I'll try to order the DVDs via the Bestsellers English bookstore, assuming they still do that for their customers). I never knew he was a sci-fi nerd and a Trekkie, too. It turned out, we both prefer the original series...

All in all, it was a very nice afternoon. I hope it won't take another year to repeat it.

I made them. They are yummy - but not worth the four(!) hours of labour I had to put into them, including the preparations. I've never been this exhausted after baking, not even on days when I baked four to five sorts of Christmas cookies on a single day. So yeah, I'll stick to Black Forest Cake next time we get an appetite something in this flavour.

At least Mum loved them, so there's that.

... concerning Mum's upcoming 94th birthday.

I called H. today and we agreed to go with Mum to Stühmer's Café on Friday, assuming the weather will cooperate, Mum will feel up to it and H. can talk someone from the younger generation to pick her up afterwards. She lives on top of a steep hill and in her current condition wouldn't manage it otherwise. If the first two conditions can't be fulfilled but she is going to have a lift back home, she'll come over to our place. It's on the same tram line as the café, she'd just have to travel ten or so more stops. We'll see.

Tomorrow I'll bake the Black Forest cookies, just in case we'll have to stay home. And besides, the birthday girl deserves to have something yummy at home, too.

In other news I've finished the teddy bear plushie. Coming up next: the elephant. I also managed to write a few lines of dialogue, so it was a successful day.

Underway

That's what I was today. First, I did the major part of the grocery shopping at Aldi. They had Alpenfest days, so I bought Apfelstrudel, pork knuckles, fresh Spätzleteig and Almdudler. Mum's going to have her birthday, soon, after all. Besides, the apple strudel and the pork knuckles are ready-made, I just have to put them into the oven and spare myself the cooking. WIN!

Then I had to wait for the guys who installed our security front door 13 years ago. Said door has become a bit wacky from its own weight, and since the guys were installing a similar door by one of our neighbours I wanted to ask them to take a look. Which they did and solved the problem in about 6 seconds. But I had to wait until they were done at the neighbour's (the same one the PT lady had to save me from last week), and she had questions. Lots of questions.

When this was all done, I went to the Savoy Park shopping centre. Mum asked me to take her church support money (or whatever it's called in English) to the post office, and I wanted to buy some upholsterer's needles. The upholstery of the stuffed armchair I use for watching crap telly (since that's the only telly available) is coming apart, and I want to fix it. It's just the sewing, fortunately, and just a small section of it, but I never used such a semi-circular needle before, so it's gonna be a real adventure.

Speaking of sewing, I've attached the tail to the teddy bear plushie. That's all the crafting I got to do today. But tomorrow I'll sew the little guy together and stuff it, so that it'll be nice and chubby. *g*

We got up an hour earlier because Mum attends to Mass via telly at 8.30. Before that, I took down the dried washing and gave her that weekly shower. Then I made the beds, washed my hair, took my own (daily) shower and prepared the teddy bear plushie for the making.

Having sewn on some of the teddy bear's parts, I decided to make up for the sleep lost in the morning. Then I made Kleingehacktes for lunch. With mashed potatoes from the box. Yes, I know. Horrible. No self-respecting housewife would do that. Fortunately, I'm not a housewife, self-respecting or otherwise, so if there's an option to get over the cooking faster, I'll take it.

After lunch, I added the remaining details to the teddy bear. Now all I need to do is to sew the panels together and stuff the bear. Which will likely happen on Tuesday, as I'll be doing the shopping tour tomorrow. I even managed to write a little bit, so that's good.

In the early evening we watched the Great Australian Bake-Off, while having a light supper. Yeah. Our days are eventful, exciting and fun. [insert sarcasm] But at least they are peaceful and warm. One should count one's small blessings.

As of no outside visitors (save for one talkative neighbour but she didn't stay long) and only laundry and cooking inside to do.

So I did have a bit of time for more crafting. I've finished the first plushie. Originally aimed for the Easter Bunny but ended up with Aromo, the Rabbit of the Unstoppable Brain (Hungarian children's tale by Ervin Lázár). As I said, just a tiny bit menacing-looking, but again, Aromo was always ready to protect his friends, so it's okay. I've also cut out the main panels for the next plushie, a teddy bear. Tomorrow there will be little details, like nose, eyes, palms and the likes.

In the afternoon we watched a bit of crap telly, then I managed to write a bit before resting my eyes (no actual sleeping, alas), then I called H. and my friend Evie. Evie wasn't near her phone but called me back later - right during the finals of the GBBO. Fortunately, I've already seen this particular season at least twice, so it wasn't a big deal.

We've survived the visit of our chiropodist lady, both physically and mentally. 'Nuff said.

As for the crafting news, I set aside my ongoing source of frustration (the never-ending doll house quiet book project) for a while and decided to make something (relatively) quick and easy: plushies. Yesterday I printed out the downsized patterns for bunnies, teddy bears and elephants, and today I actually made a bunny - well, almost. It still needs to be sewn together and stuffed, but all individual parts are sewn on and while it has a somewhat menacing look, I'm quite content with it. There'll be a picture when I've made a few more.

Not much else happened. Mum made Kartoffelauflauf (I peeled and boiled the potatoes and the eggs for it), we ate the small box of chocolate biscuits the chiropodist lady brought us as belated Christmas present, and for the rest of the day we tried to recover. Are still trying, in fact. *g*

... but at least the cleaning lady showed up on time, as promised. I hope we'll be able to keep this one. *fingers crossed*

Cleaning was brutal today, despite the fact that I didn't even manage to do the whole flat. But I did the balcony (which is always time-consuming, as one has to put the thousand-and-one things back in place afterwards - emptying it took every bit as long yesterday), the living room (sans the stuffed chairs, but even so, the living room is probably the worst in the entire flat), the carpet in the anteroom, wiped the corridor and the bathroom.

The cleaning lady washed every single door in the flat, including the built-in wardrobes, every single lamp and chandelier, dusted the tops of every cupboard and bookshelf and a few additional small tasks. I'll eventually have to vacuum the two small bedrooms and clean the kitchen, but that will have to wait until next week.

Tomorrow we'll have the talkative chiropodist lady in the house. Joy, joy. But I can't do Mum's feet (too sensitive) and can't reach my own ones well enough to do such delicate work (too much body fat in the way), so we'll have to endure.

I swear I had thought of one sometime during the day but completely forgot what it was by the time I got to my desktop PC. Which is the place where I do all my typing. On a proper keyboard.

Anyway, it was an uneventful day. I cooked for two days (again, something with cauliflower), mostly emptied the balcony that will be thoroughly cleaned tomorrow (a lady comes to clean all inside doors in the flat; that's one of Mum's favourite obsessions) and got to write a solid chunk: more than a whole page.

Other than that, I talked to H., took a nap in the afternoon and watched the GBBO with Mum. A slow day, but necessary, considered how hard tomorrow promises to be.

This was a day filled with small (but time-consuming tasks).

... and it's boring like hell, so feel free to skip the details )
Mum had a visit from the PT lady, during which I dismantled the artificial tree and wrestled it back into its paper box. It gets harder every year. Or I'm getting clumsier. One of the two, certainly.

The only truly positive aspect of the day is that I actually got a tiny bit of writing done. Just a few paragraphs, but every little bit counts.

Soooo....

... back is still sh*tty, but I had a busy day nonetheless.

- I took down the dried washing;
- I gave Mum her weekly shower;
- I washed my hair;
- I did a bit of crafting: the two tiny ironing boards;
- I did a tiny bit of writing - only a few paragraphs, but as we say it on [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo, every word counts;
- I cooked lunch (simply Käsespätzle, so that was easy);
- I put away all Christmas ornaments and the remaining cookie boxes; chaos has been partially eliminated.

I had another night of uneasy sleep (waking up three times during less than seven hours isn't exactly relaxing) and intended to catch up with it a little in the afternoon. Alas, when I finally found a position in which my back didn't hurt and almost fell asleep, the phone rang. Mum was in the kitchen, doing the washing-up, so I had to get up (in which process I pulled something in my back even worse, as I didn't have the time to do it slowly and carefully) to answer the phone - only to tell Mum's oldest lady friend that she'll call her back as soon as the washing-up is done. Grrrr!

In any case, I wasn't able to fall asleep after that. I just lay there and experienced the throbbing in my lower back in full awareness. After a while I gave up and started solving crossword puzzles. Lying on my side. For some reason that helped things to return to the occasional dull ache. Of course, it was not so good for my recently-recovered neck and shoulder, so I'd say the end result is 1:1. Getting old is definitely not for the wimps!

I did find a YouTube channel with promising exercises, though, so I'll give them a try... in the hope they won't make everything worse. *g*
wiseheart: (Default)
1) I've put away all the felt Christmas tree ornaments.
2) I removed the lolly stick ones and the folded paper stars. Now only the garlands are left.
3) I've transcribed some of the creative jam recipes into a small notebook I had selected for this very purpose.
4) We did the weekly laundry.
5) I cooked lunch - fruit soup with apples and raisins, some frozen potato croquets that I bought ready-made, filled with spinach and mozzarella and a mixed salad. Mum approved.
6) I did some minor crafting: finished the shelf for laundry room #2. Now both laundry dooms are on the same level of readiness. On to the ironing boards and the laundry baskets.
7) I'm about to type up the already written parts of the next chapter of my alternate Caretaker (ST: Voyager pilot) story.
8) I had a nice, long phone chat with H. I tried to call my friend Evie, too, but she was likely overrun with kids and grandkids as always during the weekend, so she couldn't answer the phone.

I'd say that's enough for one day. In other news, my back is still acting up; but again, it's been less than a week. Usually it needs two to four weeks to right itself. *double sigh*
wiseheart: (Default)
Well, what's all over the town for me, that is. In the morning I took out the selective rubbish, took the empty soda bottles to the machine that pays for them and did the grocery shopping. I didn't get any further than the Lidl next corner and was glad about it. We're temporarily out of the negative grades - they're supposed to return next week with a vengeance, with double digits, grrrr! - so the walkways were reasonably clear. Getting to the other side of any street was the real problem, as the cleared-off snow is piled into dunes along the walkways on both sides, so... a real adventure. Only that I don't truly feel adventurous these days. *sigh*

In the early afternoon we had additional choir practice, which I attended because we're going to sing on the funeral of our choir leader's late husband. We practiced a very beautiful Hungarian folk song called the Evensong and the canon "Dona nobis pacem". I was glad I got to sing something I actually like but not about the occasion. :(

But at least practice took place early enough so that a great many of my former colleagues were still at school. It was nice to see all those people, to chat with them a little bit. I used to like this school and all the colleagues... well, almost all of them. But if Boss Lady hadn't been such a b*tch I could have lived with the rest of them.

Anyway, it was a nice - albeit short - reunion, and Mum was happy to learn that all the people who knew her from earlier school events still remembered her and asked about her.
wiseheart: (Default)
Meaning peace and quiet. A real blessing, especially as my back has slowed me down considerably. I need twice as much time for doing things as usually because I have to be more careful. It's just certain moves that set off the pain... but those are never the same moves, so that I could just avoid them. *sigh*

Anyway, I was lazy today. Did a bit of writing, a bit of crafting, removing some more felt ornaments from the Christmas tree... and that was basically it. To be honest, it felt wonderful to be lazy. Especially the not having to cook part.

The next chapter of "Alternate Caretaker" is taking shape. I've found, to my pleasant surprise, that there were actually almost five hand-written pages for it (which translate into about six typed-up pages), they just hadn't been transcribed yet. So that's what I'm doing right now. I also added another hand-written page and figured out (at least in my head), what should be happening in this chapter. I hope it will work out. *fingers crossed*
wiseheart: (Default)
... because my back is still sh*tty, and it's still cold and dangerous in the outside. Actually, I had a very cool subject line, but by the time I got to my desktop PC I forgot about it entirely... and also about the topic I wanted to discuss. Ah, well, I'm not getting any younger.

This was a blessedly quiet day. Granted, there was Mum duty, as always, and I even had to cook, but other than that... I did a bit of writing (just about two pages, but still), started dismantling the Christmas tree (it needs to be gone by Sunday), watched some telly and took a (regretfully short) nap.

Since I've posted all the finished parts of "Alternate Caretaker" to [livejournal.com profile] otherworlds_lib, I'll have to write the rest before I can put everything on AO3. However, my muses decided to suggest me small scenes for the next story, the alternate Parallax one, so I'm typing those up first, and hope to free my mind for the main piece of work afterwards. *fingers crossed*

Neck and shoulders are all but healed - now it's my back that's acting up again. But that's nothing new. Ever since a bad move 30 years ago, when I had to reposition my bedridden grandmother quite frequently, this little problem pops up at irregular intervals. Slept in the wrong position again, apparently. Ah, well, it needs time to right itself, but it usually does.

Other than that, it was an eventful day. I did a tiny bit of sewing in the morning, then made lunch. Then Mum had a visit from the physiotherapist lady, in the middle of which our neighbour - a different one, but every bit as talkative as the one from last week - came over to discuss with me the guy who's made our secure front door 13 years ago. (It turns out, he's still in business.) This mutated into her long-winded report (which she delivered without actually breathing!) about her most recent visit to ER that apparently led to no-where. I lost track after 20 minutes.

A colleague of me used to call such people energy vampires.

Fortunately, the PT lady read my body language (she's known me for 6 years, after all) and came to my rescue, asking for a drink of water from the living room (the verbal steamrolling took place in our front door). Neighbour realized we weren't alone and left. I thanked the PT lady most profoundly, but my brain needed at least another hour to recover.

After lunch I called H. who's still quite ill; only that Little Emma has also caught her bug, so they are suffering together at home. I also talked to my friend Elise, who was very glad to postpone snow-shoveling duty for those five minutes because yes, a ton of snow has fallen during the night again.

As for the rest of the day, I did some more research and even wrote half a scene for a further story that might or might not take shape in the foreseeable future. But it was writing, which always makes me happy.
