It was an... eventful day. I had to get up at stupid o'clock to hop over to Lidl, since they had finally stocked up on grated lemon and orange peels and I had to get those before my generation (the only one still having time and energy for baking) snatched them away. I bought ten little packages of each; not that I'd need so much for the rest of the Christmas baking, but I use them all year long, and pre-Christmas is the only time thy are actually available, at least over here.

And then the drama started )
When I finally got down (having done some more food shopping and visiting a craft shop), we ate the leftovers, and I intended to take a nice, long nap. Halfway into it, my friend Evie called and reminded me that she will come tomorrow and ferry my remaining wares to school. This had been the original agreement, but since we never discussed it since then, I thought she had forgotten about it (she had lots of school- and family-related stress lately). Clearly, she had not. So I called Eenie and told her the good news that she wouldn't need to pick me up tomorrow, which was a relief for her. She would have done it, but she'll have a tightly packed day tomorrow, so it's good that she wouldn't have to come my way, too.

Two more day till the fair. I'm very excited. I hope my stuff will sell like hot buns. *fingers crossed*

... ein Lichtlein brennt. Since I braved the ladder and fetched the Advent wreath from the highest shelf of the built-in wardrobe. And the Nativity scene with its internal music box. So yeah, we were festive today.

Nonetheless, life went on as usual. I took down the dried washing, helped Mum with her weekly shower, boiled the potatoes and the eggs of which she wanted to make a casserole, boxed my finished cookies, filled the spicy vinegar into the small 200ml flasks... small things that ate a lot of time nonetheless.

At least I had the time for a short nap and some writing.

As today is November 30 - the feast of St. Andrew - we also called my cousin to congratulate him on his name day. Then I called my friend Eenie and asked her for a lift on Tuesday, before choir practice. I could haul my remaining wares to school using the bus bus Mum was panicking that it would be too heavy and I might injure myself or whatnot. Which is unlikely, but for the peace of her mind I arranged this solution. Now I'll only have to find someplace cold enough at school, so that my Christmas candies won't melt during the night.

... among other things. I actually started with the grocery shopping, during which Mum was soaking our unmentionables. She insists on doing so - apparently, Louise the Older (=washing machine) won't clean them thoroughly enough otherwise. Ah, well, jedem das Seine (oder Ihre), as the Germans would say.

After a late breakfast we put Louise to work and I started decorating the last batch of this week's cookies. They are really, really pretty. I must not forget to take pictures (unlike last week). I'm so happy with the outcome!

No cooking was done - we had leftover carrot soup and I bought doughnuts at Lidl. That was more than enough. Even so, it was almost 5 o'clock when I finished my decorative efforts and had Louise emptied, too. After which I took a nap. A short one but a nap nonetheless, which elevated my mood considerably. Plus, I didn't fall asleep repeatedly during the GBBO, which happens when I don't get my afternoon nap. *g*

So that was, basically, it. Tomorrow I'll add some last details to my cookies, fill my spicy vinegars into their 200ml flagons and everything will be done for the fair.

... and with the cookie decorating. I've made the other sort of orange cookies and glazed/decorated half of what I had baked yesterday. After all this, I wanted to take a nap, but first Mum suggested we take out the rubbish, and then I woke up to the phone ringing (her friends have the worst timing), after which I simply couldn't fall asleep. Well, I wasn't asleep at all, to be accurate, but I was on my way to that when the dratted phone rung.

At least the cookies turned out very pretty so far. I hope I can finish the decorating tomorrow and then put them into their boxes. I've postponed the second part of the cleaning till next weekend, after the fair. I still have to take some of my wares to school, plus we'll have the talkative chiropodist lady over on Monday, on the same day of which I'll have an appointment with my hairdresser, or else I'll frighten my potential customers away, so no, cleaning won't fit in. I'm dead on my feet as I am already.

... was a blast. Granted, I didn't follow the method description entirely because the chicken thighs I bought were quite large and I was afraid they won't get tender enough that way. So I fried them first the same way I'd do for chicken paprikash and returned to the recipe after that. But the meal proved excellent. Mum was impressed. Plus, we have enough leftover so that I won't have to cook tomorrow, freeing me up for baking, which is a double win.

Planned are the ginger hearts and the nougat cookies tomorrow and another version of Orangenbusserln for the day after. We'll see how much I'll manage.

Not much else happened today. Cooking took all morning; I also performed small kitchen tasks like grating zucchini and putting away stuff that had been waiting to be done for days. We watched some telly and H. called; we discussed Christmas baking for about half an hour. She's an avid cookie baker, too. *g*

As for writing, no actual words today. But I was toying around with an idea that had occurred to me last night - for a later installment in the EMV series.

Okay, I'm royally pissed! I've been watching older episodes of "Richterin Barbara Salesch" on the Sat1 channel, and now some of them are suddenly auto-dubbed. What the freaking hell? Isn't there enough English-speaking stuff out there, now they are auto-dubbing German channels? And not just this one - I tried to watch some baking stuff, namely how to make Bratmandeln at home, and one of those was auto-dubbed, too. I've tried to find out how to remove the auto-dubbing, but apparently, I can only do that for the stuff I've uploaded myself. If anyone knows ways to do it for other videos, too, please tell me.

In other YouTube news, I'm about to go cold turkey on the stupid stuff I've been watching too much lately. I've blocked several dozen channels and hope for the best. We'll see. That will give me back a lot of time I've wasted in recent weeks.

We also had choir practice today. One of M's pets showed up again - joy, joy... not really. M finally realized that the way too ambitious Kodály piece simply isn't doable with about twenty people, more than half of whom is middle aged (to put it mildly). So we'll sing something else instead, which is, at least, a relief.

I did the big grocery shopping. It took me the entire morning - two separate tours - and I actually enjoyed it, as always. Mary Berry's easy, creamy Tuscan chicken is definitely happening on Wednesday; I got all the ingredients, even the baby spinach. Yay! It's a good thing that the weather is so reasonably cold at the moment; I can store a lot of things on the balcony when the fridge is full.

Right now, it's raining, but a slow, mild rain that (hopefully) remains outside. *fingers crossed*

I didn't do anything else today. Shepherd's Pie leftovers got postponed for tomorrow. We ate soup (also leftover from yesterday) and some scones I bought during my second shopping trip. Then I was just lazy.

Also, no writing today. I originally wanted to type up some of the hand-written stuff but time somehow drifted away from me. Ah, well, fortunately I don't have a deadline.

I was totally unmotivated today - but again, I always am on cleaning days. I did the first part of the monthly cleaning in the morning: bathroom, loo and kitchen. And part of the hall because I always do it twice, there is so much dust, and the stupid red carpet keeps collecting little white... things that probably come from inside it and keep returning no matter how often I vacuum the stupid thing. While I was doing slave labour, Mum attended to Mass via telly.

After breakfast I boxed my cookies and redistributed the earlier batches into boxes my friend Elise sent with her hubby. I also packed the gluten-free ones in a separate box for my friend Evie. At that point what was left from my motivation completely evaporated, so I simply curled up on my sofa and watched stupid YouTube videos. I think I need to block at least a dozen more channels to fight my addiction. *insert wry grin*

No cooking was done, except for Tütensuppe; we had some sandwiches instead, saving the last portion of Shepherd's Pie for tomorrow when I'll have to do some major grocery shopping. On Wednesday I intend to give Mary Berry's Tuscan chicken recipe a try and will have to hunt down some ingredients that usually vanish in the exact moment I want to buy them. *sigh*

Feeling the serious need for some social contacts, I called Evie and Erna (our art teacher) for a little chat. That was nice. Then we watched Season 15 (I think?) of the GBBO, and now the day is over.

No writing was done today. All higher brain functions are AWOL.

We both are. Mum had one of those nights when she wakes up every hour for no reason; and me, I woke up about four times in six hours - also not very relaxing. I don't know why it happens sometimes, but we are suitably dead on our feet on the next day.

Accordingly, we only did what was absolutely necessary today. Meaning laundry, since it's Saturday, and I decorated the ginger-walnut biscuits. They turned out really well, every bit as pretty as I had hoped. Tomorrow, if there's enough light, I'll take some pictures.

And that was basically it. We ate leftovers, watched some telly, took naps that weren't enough by far... that sort of thing. We are still terribly sleepy, though. *yawns*
wiseheart: (Default)
I've made another two batches of Christmas cookies - I'm up to 12 now. You can check out the sticky post to see which ones. *g*

I also made shepherd's pie, which means I won't have to cook in the next two days, which is always a win. And we washed Mum's hair, which was long overdue, but it changes our morning routine, so we had to find the right day for it. Yes, we are a bit settled in our ways, how did you guess?

All this ate half the day. I took a nap in the afternoon, while Mum burned off her excess energy with the washing-up. We watched some telly then and were basically lazy for the rest of the day.

Cookie decoration will happen tomorrow. The Orangenbusserln don't have to be decorated, so I've boxed them right away when they had cooled completely. The ginger-walnut ones are not too many in numbers, so I can get creative with them in the next morning. *fingers crossed*

I took my spiced oils to school in the morning because weather forecast promised rain for the early afternoon. It turned out a lucky decision, as our art teacher is ill and wouldn't be at school in the afternoon. But this way I could place my wares with the rest and be done. Everything else needs cold storageing and can only be taken in on the day of the fair.

We had leftover soup and salad and I bought a Zwiebelkuechle on my way home, so no cooking was necessary. Instead, I took a nice, long nap - one that lasted an hour and a half and I was still half-asleep from for another thirty minutes afterwards. *g* We then had lunch, watched some telly, I called our art teacher to see what ails her, and prepared things for tomorrow's baking session.

That included climbing a ladder (albeit a short one) to get my cookie cutter collection off the pantry shelf - well, the Christmas half of it. I really need to count how many of the things I have one day and perhaps dispose of the ones I basically never use. But I have an inordinate fondness for cookie cutters. ;)

So, that was my day, with a tiny bit of writing squeezed in before my nap. I'm content with it.

Temperatures dropped below zero for the first time in the year. Thank God we have it warm and cozy inside. *g*

It was a slow day. I boxed my ginger meringues, since the icing got hard in the cold. Then I was lazy, save for the usual Mum duties, until 1pm, when I did some cooking: potato cream soup that Mum loves, fried fish fingers from the freezer, parsley potatoes and a mixed salad. Now we have soup for the next two days and leftover salad for tomorrow. I'll have to come up with something to go with the salad tomorrow.

I also ground the walnuts for the next baking session. And did a tiny bit of writing. Solved exactly one crossword puzzle and watched some YouTube videos and a bit of crap telly.

In the evening I called my friend and former colleague, Ilonka and my friend Evie. We chatted a bit over the phone. It was nice. Meanwhile Mum took over the kitchen to do the washing up. So, we were both suitably housewife-y for a day.

Tomorrow I'll take my spiced oils to school. With that, most of my wares are delivered to storage. Only the vinegars and syrups and the Christmas candies are left, but they need to be kept cool, so they'll live on the balcony until the day of the fair.

Right now it's 3°C outside. It seemed warmer from within because the weather was nice and sunny, so I almost left for choir practice with my lighter waistcoat. Fortunately, I told myself that I can always take off the thermal one if it proves too much - but I couldn't put on something else if the one I'm wearing doesn't prove enough. So I left wearing the thermal waistcoat and was grateful for my foresight. It was nice indeed but really chilly.

I still don't like our Christmas concert programme, even though I've got a small part of contralto solo in Coventry carol. The only piece I really really love is Panis Angelicus - that piece nearly makes me cry every single time. I miss German Christmas songs from our repertoire. Our school specifies in teaching German, so it would be only fitting, but for some reason our choir leader believes that German isn't a language fit for music. Eenie (who is also a German teacher) and I disagree but we don't make the decisions. Too bad; Maria durch ein Dornwald geht and Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen, for example, are stunning in multivocal version. :(

Anyway, not much else happened today. Mum had a visit from the physiotherapist lady, I decorated my Ingwerkracher and put them out onto the balcony, so that the icing can harden before I put them into boxes... and that was basically it.
wiseheart: (Default)
It was raining tonight. Not much, just enough to turn the fallen leaves into an unholy mess. I had to be careful when I did the grocery shopping - they were really slippery. Today was reasonably warm with 13-16 degrees; the colder weather is supposedly coming tomorrow. Joy, joy. And now it's raining again. I just hope the rain stays outside.

Aside from the grocery shopping I decorated my Kokosmakrönchen today: with white chocolate icing and little golden pearls and stars. They look really pretty. I also talked to my friends Elise and Evie on the phone, as well as to H. who had just returned from Germany last night. She'd been visiting her sister and had a grand old time with her folks, even though the train trip home turned out somewhat stressful. The train broke down at Nuremberg and they had to take another one, which ran late and she nearly missed her connection in Vienna.

Perhaps not being able to travel isn't that bad after all?
wiseheart: (Default)
... hadn't been planned. I originally wanted to decorate and box my rebellious cinnamon and nougat cookies, cook for two days in advance and measure the ingredients for the marzipan pretzels and the two different kind of meringue-based cookies (Kokosmakrönchen and Ingwerkracher, respectively) that I had planned to bake tomorrow.

After I had cooked the rice, chopped the chicken breasts and grated the zucchini for the stir-fry, though (a modified Mary Berry recipe), I decided to go on with the baking. Tomorrow I'll have to do some more grocery shopping, plus I have to try and fetch Mum's medicine that I hadn't got in the pharmacy where I usually go, and I imagined how nice it would be to just rest after that. So I went on straight with the baking.

The meringues were easy as always. But shaping 83 pretzels by hand seemed a gargantuan task, so I asked Mum if she felt like helping with it. She did. So I dragged our highest chair from the study to the kitchen, further elevated it with two pillows (necessary for Mum to be able to stand up from the chair) and we went to work.

Of course, Mum had never before shaped pretzels by hand. For the savoury version she once used to make, she had a cookie cutter. It took some time till she got the hang of it (I had to reshape the first dozen or so pretzels), but in the end she got really good at it. We were done in less than an hour, including baking the first two tins. Yay!

So, now I am done with half the planned Christmas baking (save for a bit of decorating tomorrow or the day after) and really proud of myself.

No matter how many times you've done it, there's no guarantees it will turn out well the next time. Last year (and the year before), when I made these nougat and cinnamon balls, they were perfectly round and smooth like a baby's bottom. Today, the dough broke every time I tried to shape it, and the pathetic little parcels I managed to form don't even resemble balls. I have no idea why - I did everything the same way as before. But that's cookie dough for you, unfortunately.

Other than the crippled little cookies, I made the grocery shopping that didn't get done yesterday, we had laundry day and I cooked lunch. I even squeezed in a bit of writing, but other than that I was pretty much flattened. Ah well, I'll decorate the cookies tomorrow and will cook for two days in advance so that I can bake the next two batches (different kinds) on Monday. *fingers crossed*

Restful

That is what today was: restful. I originally intended to do the grocery shopping, perhaps even a bit more baking, but when I got up I was completely lethargic. By the time I've made the bed and prepared the bathroom for use, I realized none of those was going to happen. So I put the street clothes I had already laid out away again and decided to be lazy all day. Clearly, I had overdone things in the last two weeks.

So I did - basically nothing all day. Nothing save for the usual Mum duties, for putting the last batch of cookies into their tin boxes, for a tiny bit of writing and making carrot cream soup for lunch. I did have two naps, an extended one for almost two hours and a short one of about half an hour, and now I feel almost human again. The rest of the day was spent with watching crap telly and the usual stupid YouTube videos.

It might seem like a completely wasted day. But it put me onto the map again, and honestly, it felt very, very good.
wiseheart: (Default)
I took the last batch of jam to school today. Erna, our art teacher, separated a corner in her classroom for my wares, so that I can move there everything in advance. Next week I'll take there the spiced oils; the rest will have to remain at home until the last day because they need to be kept cool.

In the morning I've decorated the chocolate and pistachio cookies. I'll put them into boxes tomorrow. Other than that, I didn't do much, aside from waiting the exterminator and watching YouTube videos.

The weather is... unpleasant right now. Not too cold, but wet, with clouded skies. It isn't raining, not really, just some wetness coming down almost invisibly. It wasn't enjoyable walking around in it but still better than having rain pouring down on me. Ah, well, it's autumn, right?
wiseheart: (Default)
Which will be the main event for the upcoming week, I'm afraid. I've made maple-peanut cookies today and pistachio-chocolate ones. The latter need to be decorated tomorrow, but when that's done, I'll have 1/3 of the planned baking behind me already.

Not much else happened. The day flies by when you have to chill five different portions of dough in-between actually working on the things. I did a tiny bit of writing, watched some crap telly and a few YouTube videos, talked to my friend Evie on the phone and that was basically it. Especially as I discovered a forgotten portion of cookie dough in the fridge while preparing supper, so I had to switch on the oven again... As the Germans would say, "Alter schützt von Torheit nicht", aka, old age doesn't prevent you from being stupid.
wiseheart: (Default)
Today was filled with lots of little things. I put the last batch of cookies away in a tin, washed my hair, did a little bit of writing, went to the grocery shop to buy milk, bread and cold cuts, watched some YouTube videos, chopped pecans for tomorrow's baking session... that sort of thing.

Mum had a visit from the physiotherapist lady who took a look at her lab results and declared that she'll live forever. *g* I then left for choir practice and came home with a shopping bag full of cookie tins - my usual customers headed my call and brought storage material.

Choir practice was nice enough, save that one particular piece, albeit quite beautiful in itself, made me incredibly sleepy. No idea why. In fact, I'm still sleepy. But I have "miles to go before I sleep", as they say.

All in all, it was a pleasant day. I enjoy social life... a limited amount of it anyway.
