Title: Precious Like Rubies
Author: Soledad

Fandom: Miss Marple/Sherlock BBC crossover, with a side dish of Animal Ark
Genre: Drama/Family
Rating: Teens, for now

Summary: Sherlock is dead and John needs a change of scenery. Will he get more than he bargained for?

Note: The very idea of this story is based on the fact that St Mary Mead’s resident GP, Dr. Haydock, used to have a partner named Dr Sandford. That almost sounds like Stamford who, of course, is a key “Sherlock” character, bringing John and Sherlock together in the first place. I thought I’d let Mike meddle a bit again and see what happens. To that end, I had to screw a bit with the Miss Marple timeline, planting the old lady in the Sherlock era. In everything else, I was following both canons as far as possible for this story to still work.

Main characters: Dr. John Watson, Miss Jane Marple, Mike Stamford, Dr Gerard Haydock (the local doc of St Mary Mead), Mary Morstan, Mycroft Holmes, Rev Leonard Clement, his wife Griselda, Mrs Hudson - the rest we'll see.

First chapter posted, linked to the story title. Enjoy!

Oh, and if you've got any suggestions or found any mistakes, please comment here, so that I can answer/correct/thank for them. :)Which doesn't mean that reviews on FF.Net aren't welcome. *hint, hint*

Just read your first chapter, can't wait for more. I like Mike Stamford, why would you have him married to Gwen? Oh well, he seems to know how to handle her, and is able to laugh at her foolishness.

Frankly, I just couldn't withstand the urge to give Gwen a jab. Bit in fact Mike is perhaps a little too lazy, and with Gwen keeping him on his toes, it might be good for him.

Besides, imagine our "beloved" Gwennie married to a bloke who doesn't do her bidding all the time, works long hours, and even hangs out with his mates regularly. Also, imagine Gwen trying to keep up brain-wise with Molly Hooper or Sarah Sawyer - or John, for that matter - when they come together. Isn't that a wonderful image? ;)

True, she certainly cannot stand up intelectualy to any of them. Just imagining her first meeting with Sherlock - he thinks everyone around him are idiots, then to meet Gwen.

It would give the term "idiot" a whole new meaning. ;)

I'm going to introduce more TW characters, I think - in completely different roles, just for the heck of it.

I'm enjoying your story very much. just a few thoughts as you asked for them.

"He didn't think Mycroft for his intervention. Neither did John. Both refused to talk to Mycroft ever again."

"He" is a bit confusing here, Lestrade would be better.

"Sherlock gave them – had given them, John corrected himself bitterly – three months when they had married last year. Those three months were nearly over"

You say at the beginning of the story that almost a year had passed since Sherlock died.Later in the story you say a couple of months.

" Gwen's high-strung attitude"

Should be "highly strung".

"and whiles till fit and agile for his age"

Should be "while".

""I can mail you everything," Stamford offered."

Should be "e mail"

"Good Lord, Haydock, you1re still living in the Dark Ages down there? "

should be "you're"

"I hope the two of you will hit off at once"

Should be "hit it off"

Thank you, Linda, this was extremely helpful. I've just made the necessary corrections. It's soo good to have a native speaker who sometimes weeds out the oddities. I use spellcheck and grammar checker, but they often don't catch the stupidest things.

You are more than welcome. I have the same problems with spellcheck as a native speaker. While the story is PG13(I don't read higher ratings) I'd be happy to look over chapters in advance if you wish as long as I'm around.

One I missed and could kick myself over
"He didn't think Mycroft for his intervention"
Should be "thank".

Thank you for the offer, it's eagrly accepted. I think I could even get away with a PG setting; this story is meant to match the usual rating of the Miss Marpe books, so it will be pretty tame. The only thing that might go beyond G will be a bit of violence - it's a murder mystery, after all. Or will be one.

I'm afraid I've just tore up Chapter 2 (all 8 pages of it) because I realised that Dr Haydock would never be so horribly indiscreet as I've managed to write him. So it will take time until I can send you stuff. I'll PM you and we discuss the technicalities, if that's all right with you.

I'm afraid I don't know what those things are - techno-wheenie, that's me. I use Microsoft Office and write everything in Word. But I can send you .txt-files, those are the easiest to handle. They won't have bold fonts and italics but that doesn't influence the grammar... or the total lack of it. *g*
