Hi folks! *waves*

Time is flying by, isn't it? It's that time of a year again - I'm getting older. In this case, I'm turning 55 on October 9, which used to be an important thing, back under the old regime. Women could retire at the age of 55 back then. So I've decided to ignore all that fantastic headway we've supposedly made towards democracy in the last two decades and enter my virtual retirement, blithley overlooking the fact that I'll have to work another 7 or 8 or only God knows how many years.

So, let's party! Last years virtual birthday party yielded 742 comments on 6 pages, which won't be easy to top, but we're good, aren't we? WE CAN DO IT! So, let's give it a try! In the recent years, it has always been great fun, so let's have fun again!

You're all cordially invited to help yourself to a slice of virtual Dobos Cake recipe - it's my absolute favourite, although I never managed to get it as good as my Garnny used to.

Cheers!

Note: The party will be closed on October 9, at midnight, sharp. Join us and have fun!

Yeah, it does seem that way. All the new sci-fi shows seem to be very similar as well. If there are aliens at all, it's all about infiltration and such. That's fun, too, but not if there's no variety.

Yes. Defying Gravity looked interesting, but then it got cancelled, and doesn't even seem to be coming out on dvd in r2.

What's that about? I've never heard of it before. There was this new sci-fi show that started here in Germany over the summer - another alien invasion in human bodies thing, by the sound of it, but it sounded alright - but I didn't get to watch it.

Defying Gravity is set on a near future earth where earth is developing space flight to send a manned mission to the other planets in the solar system. Publically this is for the usual reasons - exploration and so forth, but really it is something to do with an alien something found on earth previously that is somehow communicating with them and influencing events. It ended after a season with a lot of questions up in the air and not much explained at all.
One of the reasons that I like it was that they were dealing with a very limited form of space flight and a large part of the show was about them training and selecting the crew to send.
(it was on 3 or 4 years ago iirc)

That sounds very interesting! Especially the focus on the training and selection of the crew and such, I love myself a good backstory. It's a shame they cancelled the show with so much question remaining unanswered.

Yes, backstory is wonderful - one of the things I love fic for is finding out how characters in canon ended up where they did and who they are.

It has a lot of timeline jumping back and forth, so was quite confusing on the first watch, but became clearer on rewatching. :)

I enjoy that as well! It's one of my first aspects of Torchwood, actually, figuring out slowly during the course of season 1 how Jack became the person he is in current time, exploring more facets of his personality than what he shows the world. I couldn't stand him at all at first and only came to love him through the backstory.

Very true. I didn't really like or dislike him at the start, but came to like him over the series - although also to wonder how he had got that far without gaining any common sense!

*lol* I guess that's a luxury you can only afford when you're immortal!
