I'm just tired of things that go wrong all the time.

Like the rather insignificant fact that my new Norton now tells me every time I switch on my browser that it controls websites that might be cheating... whatever it means. It takes away half an inch from my useful sceen space, and as a result, I can't see the entire Mahjongg board anymore.

I hope it can be hidden or switched off somehow, but I'll have to wait for new computer expert guy to show up, because I'm a total failure when it comes to technology.

Or that my damned new digital satellite receiver still doesn't work. Three times the maintenance guys have been here, and they will come at least another three times, I fear.

The thing has cost me an ungodly amount of money that I could have used for a number of other (equally necessary) purposes. I wouldn't say a word if it worked. Only it does not. Plus, the whole disaster has already cost me one of my rare free afternoons, when I wanted to do a number of things I don't have the time to do on other days.

I really don't want such big things from life. But when not even the small things are willing to cooperate, it's really depressing.

As a fellow Mahjongg-enthusiast, I agree this is very irritating and discouraging. Can't you diminish Norton and drag it to the bottom of your screen, or doesn't it work like that?

I'm afraid it's a fixed feature. I still hope it can be hidden somehow, I just haven't found the way yet.

Actually, I'd suggest uninstalling Norton completely and downloading two other just as good antivirus and firewall:

AVG Personal Antivirus
Windows Defender (for firewall)

They don't screw up the computer as badly as Norton seems to do...

Norton doesn't screw up my computer. It just adds a "helpful" headline about certain protections working, which takes away screen space, that's all. And I've paid too much for it to just uninstall it.

Someone really needs to come up with a simple, plug-and-play internet access system for technophobes like us. Why does keeping up an online presence have to be so darned complicated?

That's very true. Although, at the moment, I'm more frustrated about my satellite receiver. These things seem to be another area where I'm cursed. Other people just get their stuff installed and it works like a charm. Not by me. Never by me.

Maybe you radiate a magnetic field which interferes with electronic devices? ;-)

It must be. Well, at least that will allow me a stellar career among the X-men, should my current job go to Hell, after all.

Ooooo, yes! Wiseheart as a Mutant! The possibilities are wonderful. Your code name would be, hmmm, I've got it: Heartwired.

You'll be the one teacher at Xavier's school that ALL the students love. The other teachers will come to you for advice, and Xavier will have you come to his office for tea each day to discuss the progress or this or that student or to help him come up with interesting new courses for the school.

And when the bad guys show up to make trouble, you'll paralyze them with brilliant prose delivered directly into their brains via the magnetic field that surrounds you. They'll be so entranced by the stories in their minds that they'll cease moving, lost in the fantasy worlds you weave.

And you'll always have a computer tech on hand to fix your electronic toys.

Heh! That would be great fun indeed - assuming that Xavier would be willing to let me have coffee instead of tea.

And my own TV and computer tech... mmmm...

Is the Norton bar this one? (only bigger :P)

Image

(If so, just right-click your browser task bar and uncheck "Show Norton toolbar" and it should be gone.)

You are a genius! I worship at your feet! It worked!
*does happy dance*

Now if you only could come to Budapest and teach me how to manage my own website... ;o))

Nah, I just recognised the annoyance from experience. ;) Glad it worked!

I may take you up on that! ;)
But meanwhile, technically I could try and teach you from where I am, if you're willing to give it a go? You may even want to take a look at this (http://www.kompozer.net/), which is free easy web-authoring software that my colleague introduced me to during a workshop recently. I was surprised at how easy to work with it is.

I can take a look. It certainly won't hurt.

But the problem with me is that I have serious difficulties with following written instructions to technical things, even in Hungarian. Probably because I'm such a techno-wheenie. *looks ashamed*

When I started my Geocities website, a friend came over and built the basics for me, and then showed me how to do the simplest things. I've never gotten any further with the whole thing in the last ten years or so. *le sigh*

I started at Geocities as well, but in hindsight building online is a lot trickier than creating pages offline and then uploading them. Trial and error is easier to deal with like that.

See if you can get the program to work, and if anything makes any sense for you, and maybe we can have a stab at curing you of your techno-wheenie-ness. ;)

Oh, I did create the pages offline - with FrontPage Express, in fact - and uploaded them to the site afterwards. The advantage of a Geocities site is that once the basics are built (by someone who knows how) even an idiot like me can add more pages.

The problem is that 15 MBs really aren't that much, which is why I wanted the new sites. Plus, I'm still unable to do anything else but add text. Not even pictures did I manage.
