I decided to leave the coral as it is - I can always add the sequin ribbon later, assuming it will resurface before February - and attacked the submarine next. It is yellow, of course; anything else would be heresy, right? I actually managed to finish it, even though Mum got inspired by my craftiness and decided to patch up a decorative pillow-case that has been in the process of falling apart for quite some time.

Of course, she needed help with pinning on the patches, etc. Of course, we disagreed about how it ought to be done. Of course I had to undo all her hard work half an hour later because it didn't work the way she thought it would. Tomorrow I'll try my way, and if it still doesn't work, I'll take it to the seamstress in the new year.

Now, you might ask: why so much pain about a pillow-case. Well, our decorative "day" pillows are all quite old, embroidered pieces of folklore art. Throwing the pillow-cases out and replacing them with similar ones (assuming I'd find similar ones in one of those outrageously expensive souvenir shops) would cost a fortune. So we'll try to get them repaired as well as we can.

In the light of such "dramatic" events we decided to eat leftovers, even though I'd actually started [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat's famous carrot/ginger soup. I'll finish it tomorrow when I've done a minor food run. Fortunately(?), there will be nothing on sale in the local supermarkets that we'd really need, so food shopping promises to be quick and easy. (Famous Last WordsTM, I know...)

In the afternoon, first came the blind lady from the flat opposite ours with a gift of apples from her sister's garden, as a thank-you for giving her Christmas cookies. Two hours later another neighbour dropped by; the one we regularly exchange Christmas gifts and baked goods. We had a drink and some cookies before she left for church. We got an oven mitten, a package of Segafredo coffee and some Zimtsterne - yum!

So, it was another good day, for which I can't thank the heavenly powers often enough. Just glancing at the news makes me realize how very lucky and blessed we are.

Zimtsterne! I just realised I didn't have any yet this year...it's not too late!

It is never too late for Zimtsterne! *g*
We didn't have any yet, either — I bake so much before Christmas that we don't buy sweets... and baking Zimtsterne is just too much effort with less than satisfying results. In my case, at least.

So do I, but if we don't, I won't fall on my sword, either. We won't last forever; we can't expect it from things, either, right?

This year was the first year I did Zimtsterne myself, and it went fairly well. It was you who gave me the idea, because you told me that Zimtstern 'dough' was similar to myNussschnitten dough. Only easier and better to handle. They are now on my do-those-again list.
If I'do a submarine it would definitely not be a yellow one. Never liked the Beatles...

Neither did I, but that particular song has been an Ohrwurm for me all my life. Actually, that's the only song of them I could ever remember; and that includes the ones our conductor forced upon us as something "modern".

My Zimtsterne always ended up hard like shoesoles, so I gave up making them myself.

We have every reason to be indeed.

This year, in particular, I think we all feel blessed if we have a warm home and any kind of food on the table. How nice of your neighbour to share some of her food (apples) with you, too.

We've got a fairly cordial neighbourhood. Four of the five families having our flats in the same corridor have lived here since 1977, and the fifth one moved next to us but a few years later. The three of us who regularly bake often share cookies with each other and the blind lady living opposite us, and said lady sometimes reciprocates with fruit from her sister's garden.

That's so very true. I also think about that every day.
