While playing solitaire games online, there are the oddest ads when one starts a new game. In one of those ads a lady (I think a journalist or whatnot) is speaking about writing, and there is a sentence that hit home strongly. She says:

The problem with your writing isn't your lack of talent; it's the people who keep interrupting you.

I could never have put it so well, but yeah, it is the honest truth. I love Mum to pieces, but she has absolutely no sense when not to interrupt me with some mundane sh*t, no matter if I'm writing or translating. She just comes in, blurts out what's on her mind, and my concentration is broken for good. Fortunately, I've got used to these interruptions and learned how to find back to my mindset - well, most of the time - but it would be lovely not to be interrupted when I'm trying to put a sentence together in a way that would tell a potential reader exactly what I want to tell. And that in a third language, too!

Not that I'd have many readers (understatement of the Age here), but I feel responsible to deliver the best I can... if people only let me!

It's the Joyce Carol Oates Master Class--I get that ad all the time, and I love the way she opens with that statement :) Wonderful writer, she's very well-known here; award winning, very prolific and
interesting. All those ads look interesting, but I find it hard to believe that the classes actually can teach you what the ads promise!

Neither do I, but that opening statement is fantastic!

this is why I do my writing in the wee hours of the morning when there is no one else up.

My mind doesn't work that early. Besides, Mum has a sixth sense for when I'm up and doing something and unfailingly appears sooner rather than later. *g*

I don't know. I used to write and I never got interrupted because my roommate at the time was very polite about that sort of thing, and I thought my writing was good but only a few of my friends liked it.

When I started writing in the Tolkien fandom, just when the first LotR film came out (even though I don't like the films), I actually gained quite a few friends based on this fact; fellow writers with a similar view on the source material. It's my great regret that they've fallen out of the fandom years ago and thus the contact broke off, too.

It can be sometimes. Nonetheless, I've written six pages of a new vampire crossover story in the last couple of days, just for my own amusement.

Oh my god, it's so true! One of the reasons I think I can't write anymore (for the last couple of years anyway) is because my husband, who is gradually becoming more and more senile and forgets everything, is constantly interrupting me while I'm in the middle of something, and of course, his demands must always be met immediately. It's almost impossible to concentrate on anything.

I can imagine. Fortunately, Mum is still sharp as a razor, but when I don't jump to do what she wants me to do, she can simply stand at arm's length as long as I finally give in. *g*

I once lived with a man who had three dogs. Part of the rent deal was that I take care of the dogs. Now, I love animals but these dogs had me at my wits end. Any quiet moment I had to do some writing ... right when I was just at the moment of clarity the dogs would all suddenly start barking startling me and totally completely braking my concentration. It was as if they had ESP. Truely!

Here, in our building, there used to be someone whose idea of taking out the dog for a walk was to let the poor thing lose on the streets and go home. In the following hours all 200+ families living in the building could "enjoy" the barking and whining of the dog, until its owner finally deigned to let it in again.

I'm not sure, it's possible that the poor dog passed over. I haven't heard it for years.
