Originally, I hoped to make some decent headway with the transcribing job - I only have 6 pages left, after all! And I wanted to sew together the binding stripes of the doll house quiet book. Perhaps even start translating the next story.

Instead, I got up at ungoldy 6 o'clock (don't laugh at me, Spikey, for me it is an ungodly hour!) because I needed to go to the supermarket as we've practically run out of meat, and I wanted to get there when they opened, or not much later. When I did get there it was obvious that other people got the same idea...

I had to make two runs, to two different supermarkets because:
a) we don't have a car and I can't carry as much as I used to, and
b) because there are certain things I can only get in the one or the other supermarket.
Still, I made both runs within an hour and a half, not because I'm particularly athletic but because the supermarkets are within easy reach. Thank God for small favours.

When I got home, Mum and I did some cooking, which is always time-consuming because the kitchen is small, we keep hindering each other in making any decent progress, and Mum has slowed down considerably in recent years. But in the end we managed to do our respective parts and to have lunch at an acceptable time.

German TV has brought back my favourite programmes: Der Trödeltrupp and Zuhause im Glükc - both re-runs, of course, but I like to watch them, even though I've already seen them all at least twice. Today, however, I was so tired that I kept falling asleep. From that POV it is fortunate that I've already seen them at least twice, of course. *g*

And it's raining out there. The only positive aspect of the last couple of weeks was the nice weather - now even that is gone, and we can start fretting about the balcony again. As if the coronathingy weren't enough. *sigh*

The only good thing today was an e-mail I got from a young colleague (well, ex-colleague, technically, although I still consider myself part of our school). Her in-laws are publishers and are looking for someone who'd translate a children's book from German. If we can deal with the legalities so that I won't get in conflict with the tax office, I might be doing it. It would be fun. But I won't shoot myself in the head if it doesn't come together. I've got enough ways to occupy myself. Still, doing something different would be interesting.

Ooooh, good luck with the translation gig!

Regarding the shopping, do you have a shopping trolley (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoppa-Lightweight-Shopping-Trolley-Capacity/dp/B071WM3JK6/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=trolley+basket&qid=1584819995&sr=8-17) thing? They were all the rage when I was small and then disappeared when people got cars, however, in London and here I never used a car... and bottles of wine are heavy, so I have one in Norway and the UK. (They are er... considered an old lady thing.)

Nope. Many people have it, and it seduces them to buy more stuff than they can drag up any stairs even with the shopping trolley. We have 14 stairs from the house entrance to the lift... Over here the things are called hag thanks because, yes, it's mostly old ladies who use them.

Ah the stairs. :( I was wondering if there was a reason and this makes sense.

I'm a proud Hag! :D

So am I. Also, a reasonable one (or so I hope). I've figured out how much it is I can carry without totally ruining my back (although Mum has different ideas and keeps nagging me to to carry so much), so when it's more, I simply make another run. A bit exercise doesn't do any harm, although sitting at home all the time makes one weaker; I was a bit breathless when I reached the local Aldi, which is usually an easy 10-minute walk for me. Getting older isn't for cowards.

My calculations usually work well enough; in recent months I only miscalculated once, and after that I had slight difficulties to exhale, due to the overstretched chest muscles or whatnot. Fortunately, it was right before a choir practice, after which our choir director gave me a lift home. Since then I've been even more careful.

Hey I hope you are holding up alright. Glad that going to the supermarket early paid off. It would be really nice if you could do the translation gig, I hope it works out for you.

Hey, welcome back, it's nice to hear from you again! It's been too long! I hoped you'd emerge for [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo, but I understand that you probably aren't in the best mindset for it right now. Neither of us is, I'm afraid, but just talking to each other helps with the isolation.

Yeah, for sure. I'd already been struggling to motivate myself to write all year and then Corona sure didn't make it any better.

Which is why I chose to do the transcribing and translating thing this time. It has to be done anyway, and it's already existing stuff that I don't have to use much creativity for.

That's a clever plan! Works very well as a work-around, and yeah, like you said, it still needs to be done.

I'm with Mom and very glad for it, I'd be worried for her otherwise. Even "just a cold" has been hitting her very hard in the last years and I know from the past that she will always tell me at the phone that she's fine even when she isn't. We are well so far and fortunately don't have to leave the house outside of getting groceries.

We'll see if it comes together or not. I did a lot of translating from German in my misspent youth: mostly religious stuff for the Benedictines and official letters for the union Mum worked for. Compared with that a children's adventure book would be a piece of cake.

It's nice to have projects while we are shut-in. The hospitals here are short on masks and are asking the public to help make them. I downloaded the pattern and am going to give it a try. Good luck with your transcribing and transcription.

Transcribing is finished (insert triumphant howl here). We'll see if the translating job comes together. I won't break out in tears if it doesn't; I can keep myself busy well enough.

Where did you find the pattern for the masks? What fabric do you use for them?

The masks are made from 100% cotton and lined with either the same or with flannel. I include the links for the article and pattern below. They say to only print the pattern from .pdf to ensure the correct measurement.

I didn't sleep well, which is a rare thing for me. I guess it's the underlying worry and tension about this situation. Worked a bit on the binding strips of the quiet book and finished the transcription, so all in all it is a successful day already.
