One of my younger ex-colleagues paid me a visit today. She helped to set my birthday prezzie (the mini sewing machine) up correctly, so I hope I'll be able to use it in the future without difficulties.

Since Grandma always said that one ought to serve one's guests nice things, I baked a hazelnut-chocolate sponge cake, filled with red currant jam and topped with white chocolate icing.

Take a look:

The decoration consists of mini marshmallows and milk chocolate drops. It turned out very yummy. A good thing that I can eat basically everything in the 8 hours when I'm allowed to eat at all. As it is, I don't feel particularly hungry during the rest of the day, surprisingly enough. Actually, I eat less than I used to. Hopefully, it will work out. My ankles and knees would be grateful.

Other than that, yesterday we finally had the dratted windows cleaned, so a big part of the renovating hell's damage has been cleaned up. Only the doors left.

It's surprising how dirty windows seem to creep up on you. One of the first things I noticed in my rental agreement was that the owner insists that the windows be cleaned monthly. Fortunately, I found a cleaner fairly easily, because even though my property is on the ground floor, cleaning them would involve ladders.

I must ruefully admit that we only have the windows cleaned twice a year. That's what curtains are for. *g*
Ladders are the main problem with us, too; Mum is too old to climb on them, and I got vertigo after three steps upwards.
