Mum and I went to the eye doctor today - she for her usual sixt-month-control and I because I haven't had my eyes looked at since November 2016. Yes, I know it's irresponsible, but my working schedule barely allowed me to get Mum to her control. Mine never fit in.

Anyway, the good news is that there is no deteriorating of our eyes, by either of us. Poor Mum has lived in fear that she might not be able to avoid eye surgery because of her cataracts (is that the word?) but the lady doctor (an old acquaintance of mine) said that if she gets on with what eyesight she has, they don't have to do it. So we won't.

So, the day after tomorrow is a double appointment: for Mum to have her bi-annual osteoporosis control and for me the dermatologist to take a look at the bumps on my face. I'm fairly sure that they are a result of my skin reacting badly to harsh sunlight, as they only appear on the right side, where I got the sun both by going to work and getting back from work, and nowhere else on my body, but better safe than sorry.

And then we'll start our long and repetitive pilgrimage to the dentist's...

Fingers crossed the bumps are nothing.

Cataract surgery actually is pretty straightforward - my grandma had it done when she was almost 90 and never had any problems. Though she only got one eye done ... enough to be able to read again!

Yet you can never be sure. Our sacristan had both her eyes done; one surgery went swimmingly, the other one terribly wrong, with lamed eyelids and stuff, although they were done by the same excellent surgeon. Mum has grüner Star on the other eye, which is inoperable and seriously impairing her eyesight. Should anything go wrong with the surgery on her good (well, better) eye, it would leave her practically blind.

That's definitely a lot to think about then.

Good luck with the bumps, and good to hear the eyes are in the clear for everyone.

It is a relief, indeed. As for the bumps, I tend to get various sorts of them from the harsh sunlight. I've been just too distracted to go to the dermatologist regularly, and now the old one has retired and I have to get used to a new one. *sigh*

oh my. Both of my biological parents had cataracts removed within recent years. Both of them were nervous but then thrilled with the results. My dad was happy to get his night vision back and Mom was happy to have colors be vibrant again. For them it was so worth it!

I understand that. However, my Grandma lost 92 per cent of her eyesight by a simple examination (widening the pupils for diagnostic reasons) and lived the last 20 years of her life practically blind, so we're a bit wary about anything coming even near our eyes.

It was one of those things you can't foresee: had something to do with the calcification of the seeing nerves or whatnot; she might even have had a small bleeding in the brain that went undiscovered. But the mere fact made us very suspicious about so-called routine surgery.

That’s wonderful news! It’s terrifying watching one’s eyesight deteriorate. apparently I have a cataract (at my age!) but it’s so undeveloped that they wouldn’t have even found it if it weren’t for the extensive eye examinations I have for other vision problems. My mum had her cataracts removed a few years ago, and she really enjoyed her improved vision. The thought of eye surgery is terrifying though. I will need to have my glaucoma operated on and it scares the hell out of me. I don’t know how my mum was so calm about her eye surgery... so glad your mum doesn’t need surgery.
Hope your skin bumps are ok. It’s good that you’re both so conscientious about regular checkups.

Mum is. I'm not so much. I used to go to the dermatologist twice a year because of different sorts of bumps - they turned out a certain kind of warts that the doctor froze away with liquid nitrogen. However, in recent years I was too stressed out, not to mention had an impractical working schedule, so I neglected to go to my controls, and in the meantime my doctor retired. *sigh*
