Firstly, the baby journal for my colleague CsÉ's grandson, expected to be born in two weeks' time. Just the front cover, as the inside is basically lots of teddy bear pictures with titles like "Mummy's Little Hero", "Cuteness Alert" and the likes.

Brownie points for those who can guess what the wheels are made of!

Then the finished Kastanienwürfel aka chestnut squares:

They turned out fairly well, if I say so myself. Actually, Mum says so, too.

Also, the girl who's started learning German from scratch today is a real sweetheart. I knew she was a nice kid but I haven't expected to be quite this easy to work with her. I only hope it will last. But the colleagues who know her say that she's eager and good-natured as a rule. So far, I enjoy working with her.

Sorry - I'm not going to win the Brownie points ... ;-)

Well, if you owned a PC, say, ten years ago, the wheels should appear familiar...

Oh...wow. Where did you find those?

I dismantled them years ago but kept the metal parts in case they would come in handy - and they did!

Okay, I have no idea what the wheels are made of. I know it must be something every clever, though. How did your German lesson go today?

It went very well. I actually enjoyed it. :)

As for the wheels, think of older - much older - PC equipment!

Are those off 3.5 discs?

I'm so glad. You were just so happy last week, I wondered if the lessons were a good idea. Looks like it's all go. :D

Bingo!

As for the lessons, I'm feeling optimistic. It wasn't the kid herself, I knew she was a sweetie, it was just the "another afternoon gone" effect that caused a minor freak-out by me.

What a clever use for them. :D

I get like that at times, too. I'm glad things are better now.

Even if they had to wait in a cupboard for several years for their chance. *g*

Mine are all gone by now - I simply don't have the storage space I would like to have. These parts only survived because I kept them at school and now that I had to empty my workplace cupboard, I rediscovered them.

Sigh... I wish ours were all gone, but TBG has a hard time getting rid of technology, even obsolete technology.

I was going to ask on the last post if there were pictures of the journal. The wheels look familiar, but I can't place them. When you reveal I shall go d'oh!

You probably will. Think of older data storage thingies - before CDs and data sticks came about.

OMG! I GET IT!

Bloody hell, you still have some of those? (Mind you, I think I still have some in a drawer somewhere too.)

Actually, I've dismantled them years ago. But as I was cutting up the plastic parts to destroy the data, I thought it would be wasteful to throw away the metal parts as well; I had so many, and I thought eventually something could be made of them. Originally I was thinking in the steampunk direction, but I find the pram looks well on them, too.

If you have enough, they could be corded together to make a belt?

Perhaps, although I'm not that big on accessoires. I think I'll just keep them and use them up piece by piece for scrapbooking or something similar. Hardcore scrapbooking is just too kitschy for my taste.

I really had a lot and, alas, threw out many metal parts - both the middle discs and the little square thingies - before the idea of keeping them occurred to me.

I never would have guessed the wheels and I still have lots of 3.5" disks laying around. Love what you did with the journal and the cake squares look delicious, and quite pretty!

Thanks. The disks themselves are of no use anymore, but the metal parts can come in handy, as we've seen.

The cakes look really, really, yummy.

And what a lovely baby book, I think they are such a good idea, I wish I'd done one when my daughter was a baby.
