All right, finally got around to watch that movie. I don't really know what to think about it. Probably knowing the RPG based on which the movie was made - it is an RPG, right? - would help things, as I was confused about the whole situation and had no idea who the characters were supposed to be.

My impressions, in no particular order and without as much as a grain of coherence:

- The Bad Guy (Jeremy Irons' character) was pathetic. The exaggerated acting didn't help, either.

- His chief honcho - he of the shockingly blue lips - was scary, but the scarlet cloak with the horns made me laugh.

- It must be from too much fanficcing that I see Mary Sues alll over the planet, but two of the only three female characters (the Empress and the Magician girl) had definite straits of a Sue.

- The dragons were cool, even though they had a lot common with a Tyrex. And their wings would never be able to lift a body of that bulk and weight, IMO. But I can be mistaken.

- The Elves were cool, too. The she-elf with the comm device reminded me of T'Pol, though. She was very... Vulcan, aside from her Pamela Anderson-sized breastplate. Though T'Pol has big boobs, too... Hmmm...

- The Dwarf was ridiculous. I experienced startling flashbacks of movie!Gimli, down to the eating habits and the axes. Looked less old and wrinkled, too, despite of his baldness.

- The old Magician - or is that Sorcerer? I saw the movie with German dubbing - looked nice, though, even if a bit stereotypical.

- Cool fighting scenes. I liked the visual effects when the swords clashed.

- Liked the labyrinth with its dangerous traps, too.

- With no previous background knowledge, I couldn't understand what the various monsters were doing there. One sort of them would have made passable Orcs, too. The black ones in armour. At least they weren't rotting alive like PJ's movie!Orcs.

- Some sets, like the School of the Magicians, were great, others (like that Dragon temple or whatnot) really disappointed. And I was angry that we didn't get to see a dragon birth.

All in all, if was a nice, though forgottable film. I had no expectations and no former devotion to the original source, so I actually enjoyed it.

Other than that, I sat through a long and boring conference today, and finished the Alternate Caretaker chapter and the one to the new LOTR story. I hope I'llb e able to round up the new Innocence chapter as well during the week.

Agreeing with more or less all of the above!

It must be from too much fanficcing that I see Mary Sues alll over the planet, but two of the only three female characters (the Empress and the Magician girl) had definite straits of a Sue.

The movie felt a bit like fanfic in its entirety to me.

And it didn't really capture me. I was able to leave the room, cook, write emails, etc...., and I didn't feel as if I had missed something. But it was a nice pastime ;-)

Yeah, I agree. Fortunately, I could fast forward all the places that bored me. I might sit down one day and watch it again, before deleting the whole thing.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Snails (the other thief) dagerously reminded me of Jar Jar Binks.
