Mum and I went to the Auchan supermarket today because the fridge was empty. So was the larder... or rather the kitchen cupboard we use as a larder. The idiots who planned these houses (men, obviously) didn't think that a larder would be necessary.

Anyway, we went together after work, because I don't dare to carry as much as before since I had the latest long-lasting back problems. We bought almost everything we needed (still have to go back for flour and sugar tomorrow) and managed to bring everything home in one go... right until we turned into our street and were about ten metres from the front door. Then some people we know passed by and greeted us, and Mum bent forward a tad too much to avoid stepping into some uneven piece of the paving. (Did I mention that the street lamps are worth shit in our street?)

In any case, she lost balance and instinctively threw herself backwards, in order not to fall onto her bad knees and landed on her back. Fortunately, she was wearing her short winter coat of fake fur, so the impact was fairly mild. She hit her head a bit, but other than a slight swelling, which we got back with cold compresses, she is unhurt. The people we met helped her back to her feet and supported her to the door, and she took it all in her stride with good humour, but boy, was I scared shitless as I saw her lying on the ground!

As I said, we were very, very lucky. I can imagine her guardian angel wiping cold sweat from their brow. I know I wiped some from mine.

So glad your mum is okay, such things are so scary, I've been through similar experiences several times, the shakiness will pass. *hugs*

I hope so. We lost my Granny as a result of a bad fall, so these things always scare me out of my wits.

That's understandable. I worried about mum all the time.

Inevitable role reversal, I guess.

I guess so. As parents get older, we become the carers.

Oh goodness that is so scary! Absolutely terrifying! I'm glad she is (relatively) unhurt!

She is well, considering... more emotionally shaken than physically hurt, in fact.

Glad to hear it! But I'm sure you'll pamper her over the weekend!

I'm trying, but she won't let me. Today she insisted on cooking already. But I baked her cheesy buns, so we are on equal footing, I guess. *g*

Yea, it's good!

And I totally get the not wanting to be pampered. Have the same problem. I guess the older you get, the more you value your independence to do things for yourself. Even when you SHOULD rest *huffs and grins*

Oh no! What a scary thing for each of you: her feeling herself falling and you seeing her lying there! I'm relieved to hear that she is, for the most part, unharmed. Warm hugs to you both!

Thank you. It is not the first time something like that happened, and this was a relatively mild one compared with some of the others. But she has osteoporosis, so taking falls is definitely not a good thing for her.

Thanks, my friend. Yes, she's OK, more or less. A bit shaken and a bit frightened, but she's a tough old lady.

Thank goodness your mother is mostly unscathed by the fall. Winter walking can be such a treacherous activity. What a scare for you both. Take care.

Will try. The stupid thing is that it isn't really winter over here yet - they promise it for the weekend - and even the paving was completely dry. These things happen nonetheless. *sighs*

What a scare! I'm glad your mother's more or less okay and I hope none of the damage is lasting. (My mother had an epileptic attack on New Year's day. It was quite horrible to see, but it doesn't seem to have had any further impact.)
Wish her all the best from me.

I did. She sends her thanks.
Yes, it is scary seeing your parents like that, isn't it? I mean, we know that they have grown old and fragile, but our subconscious still expects them to be the parents, who are strong and safe and know all the answers... even if they don't.
