Ivan in the novels reads as heterosexual, yes, though I think one could argue his lack of interest in commitment to marriage could be due to closeted m/m orientation. Byerley reads to me as queer in the novels. (And rumour has it that By also gets paired off?) One of my problems with A Civil Campaign was the neat way in which everyone got paired off in m/f pairs, especially after all the gender fluidity with Donna/Dono. *nods* I can see the arguments about Ivan (although certainly his pov in ACC would imply at least very closeted...)
Yes, By gets paired off. But iirc it is fairly strongly implied that he is bisexual... he does end up in a relationship (not sure how far it is stated to be permanent) with a woman, there are also implications that it might not be monogamous... But I might be remembering wrong as I read it once when the earc came out (and have intended to reread but not got that far yet) - and before I certainly read By as coming across as queer (I wasn't sure if it was how he really was or part of his personna...)
