I'm in complete agreement with you about "Merlin" - which is why I went a very AU path with "Arthur's Quest". (Note to self: I really, really need to finish Book One in the November session of picowrimo.)
As for "Camelot", I only saw a few glimpses of it when checking if the DVDs are all right. So far, I can tell you that I liked Sir Kay, hence his appearance in "Arthur's Quest". I think I ought to watch the complete series, and then we'll be able to chat about it on LJ and compare it with "Merlin", eh? :))
