Actually, I saw a modern day story in which he surivived. It was something about a solider being captured and tortured in some Middle East country. But he did survive.
I knew he would die in this series, though - you cannot search the internet about GoT and remain unspoiled. Besides, I prefer knowing in advance, it lessens the shock.
