Yeah, apparently, it works. I really wish they would stop, though, since I sometimes intentionally avoid shows thinking it's going to be something I hate, only to find out much later the element I avoided it for isn't a big part of the show at all.
In the case of Vampire Diaries, I was so put off by the cheesiness of the love triangle ad campaign, I didn't give the show a chance at all. Although missing the first couple of episodes might have been lucky, since wiseheart did watch the pilot and stopped watching in the midst of it.
