Fandom 2009

Your main fandom of the year?
Merlin. Definitely. Also, Torchwood, until the abomination that was CoE

Your favourite film watched this year?
Ladyhawke, seen in original for the first time, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] lissas_elves

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Merlin, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] the_wild_iris

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Torchwood CoE. I refuse to accept it as part of the canon. I was also fairly unhappy with the TOS canon rape of a movie.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Lancelot from "Merlin". The long-haired version of it. I mean him

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Haven't really seen any female characters I'd like.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Merlin offing Nimueh. And him giving the Great Dragon the finger. Merlin rocks.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
Star Trek, as it used to be in the crappy old times. And the original (=one and only) BSG, now that the By Your Command archive is gone.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I've got too many fandoms already. But I'd love to see some genuine sci-fi for a change, instead of the sorry excuses (Torchwood, Firefly, etc.) that I saw last year. Although I did like Series 1 an 2 of Torchwood, to a certain extent.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Finishing "Web of Darkness". Finding readers who actually like my stuff and make the effort to say so. Yeah, I'm pathetic, so what?

I think CoE was a well told sci-fi story in many ways...and the acting was top notch. Other things about it bothered me, but as a whole I usually have to admit it's probably some of the best sci-fi I've ever seen.

Ladyhawke and Merlin.

I could have tolerated glaring plotholes in CoE (you could actually drive a truck through them) if RTD hadn't tried to sell it us as Torchwood. It wasn't Torchwood, and aside from the similarly-named characters it had nothing to do with Series 1 and 2 of TW, which I loved very much, despite of it being often badly-written and crappy.

I'll never watch anything even tangentially to do with RTD again.

Ladyhawke was your favourite film of the year? Wow! (But hey! I love it, too.)

Everytime you mention Merlin I'm reminded of another major fan on my F-list: If it's not one of you squeeing about the series, then it's the other. One of these days, I'll have to convince myself to check what all the hype is about. ;-)

>>Finding readers who actually like my stuff and make the effort to say so. <<

May I respectfully remind you that your story did really well in the MEFAs?

I know, I'm happy about it. It's the other two or three dozen stories that sadden me. ;)

And you really, honestly ought to check out Merlin. It's the most charming thing I've seen in a very, very, very long time.

I'm with you all the way regarding Torchwood! Gah, I could still kill RTD...

But thankfully there's no need to miss BSG, the Archive is not gone, just moved - you can find it here ;)

I love you, I really do! *runs off to save link*

Hmmm... it seems to be a very different archive under the same name... But it's still BSG, so I'm not complaining. Fortunately, I've saved a great deal of my favourite stories to my HD - too bad I failed to save all of them.

Yeah, Torchwood ws a really bing disappointment. I had to write ungodly amount of fanfic (including "The Many Departures of Gwen Cooper") to cheer myself up.

Have you seen the latest Doctor Who special yet? *facepalm*

No, I haven't seen it, but we don't get any Who over here. However, I'm a member of [livejournal.com profile] antigwenallies, and my fellow antigwennites are positively fuming about it.

Erm - I found my way here from the stats on my website (the Celestial Dome), if you're wondering why I turned up uninvited on your journal!

Just to say that the original By Your Command was lost because the person hosting it could no longer afford to do so. All of the stories on it are now held on By Your Command V2 (http://byyourcommandv2.com/). V2 is a closed archive as all new submissions should go to the archive [livejournal.com profile] songfire3 gave you - but it should have most of the stories you remember.

Oh, I don't mind at all if people turn up on my journal - in fact, I like to meet new people. Especially with such wonderful gifts. "Mapping the Genome" is one of my all-time favourites, but I quite liked some of your other stories, too.

Thanks for the link - it will be such delight browsing some of the old favourites.

BTW, haven't you written some excellent Andromeda fic as well? I seem to remember...

No,not Andromeda. I've written a few short SGA John/Rodney fics, but my second fandom these days is Lancer, a western from the late 60s.

Hmmm, strange. I'd have sworn that I've read stories from you in the Andromeda Uncovered archive. *checks*

Oh, I see. That was someone else, with the pen name Ana. My mistake. To my defence, those are very well-written stories, too. ;)

I love that one beyond almost everything else I've ever read in this fandom. I'm not into the Starbuck/Apollo pairing (quite frankly, it bores the living highlight out of me), but I willingly accepted it for everything else that went on in that story. The most original approach to original BSG I've ever seen, together with Karen's "Out of the Past".

Thank you - that's very kind!

I love Karen's stuff too. It's a shame she's not active in the fandom any more, but really, very few people are now.

Yeah, sometimes I get the impression that I'm the only one still writing for the old show - although my stuff isn't strictly BSG, of course.

I've exchanged e-mails with Karen some time ago, and apparently she still intends to get back to her unfinished BSG-stories, life just got into the way. So we can still hope. ;)

I think you need to reconcile yourself to short-haired Lancelot :). I mean, what if he has short hair for the rest of the series? What if a witch casts a spell that leaves him with no hair at all? What if Arthur hacks his hair off in a jealous rage? Are you just going to cry into your pillow at night and watch 'Lancelot' over and over? ;)

Perhaps. I'm a principled woman, after all. Or I'll write lots and lots of fanfic with long-haired Lancelot in it.

Or I'll simply buy him a wig. ;)

And for Arthur, too. Perhaps it's cheaper if I buy two?

I'd love you to write fanfic about Lancelot. Whatever length his hair was.

You should definitely send a consignment of wigs to the BBC :)

I ought to finish "Movements" first... then, we'll see.

Wigs it is, apparently. Except for Giles... erm, I mean Uther, of course. He'd really look horrible with long hair. Although... I just found a pic of him on Google as long-haired pirate, and it wasn't actually that bad.

artemis10002000: Don't drink water... fish have sex in it (gackt sleeping)
From: [personal profile] artemis10002000
Ya know, when I watched the new Star Trek movie, I felt like I was watching Firefly. I spent the first hour lamenting "when did Star Trek turn into a space western?" Then they came up with the alternate universe theory (though I believe the originator verse still wasn't THE ST verse, Spock's ship struck me as too advanced for that) and I decided to just accept it as "the token space western verse" just like Buffy features a "world without shrimps"... which greatly improved the experience for me. The only time I got the Star Trek feeling was at the end, though, with the crew in uniforms similar to TOS and the old opening credits as ending credits.

I decided that it's the expectations that killed it for me. ST is a fun popcorn movie with a crazy-but-fun universe and I could've really liked it and the quirky cast... if I hadn't watched it expecting something completely different. If my mind hadn't constantly been yelling at me that this or that goes against everything we know about the Star Trek universe (and damn, did they re-model earth and the earth humans! Even ENT-era earth is far more "civilised" than new-TOS era earth. That's totally Firefly.) and if I hadn't been too busy analysing how similar the new characters are to the originals... I'm really good at ignoring plot holes for the sake of fun, usually, but all my suspension of disbelief was used up by trying to convince myself that I was really watching Star Trek.

Ironically, the next day I watched Transformers 2 and all the things which annoyed me about Star Trek didn't annoy me there at all.

Arrrrgh! *shudders*
One Firefly was more than enough! I've read all the spoliers about the Star Trek movie and decided, for the sake of my own sanity, not to watch it. Even though I'd have liked to see Chris Pine, as I used to love hid Dad in CHiPs.

For me, Star Trek basically ended with the first two or so seasons of Voyager. Before the new, degraded Borg appeared. I haven't even bought the entire 7th Season on video, and I did buy everything else what had gone before, even the animated series and the awful movies that I hated.

If the mere idea of Star Trek gone Firefly-style space western makes you shudder already, yeah, then you definitely shouldn't watch the movie. The wild west earth and earth humans will break your brain.

Some characters are endearing, though, such as NuTrek Scotty and McCoy. What really annoyed me, though, is how they handled Uhura. She gets a lot of screentime, but it's all being eye candy and/or love interest *bangs head against keyboard*

Ladyhawke is awesome. I've been thinking about watching Merlin as I've heard a lot of good things about it. I may put the first season on my Netflix list although it's already pretty long.

Yep, Ladyhawke is absolute fantastic. The Bishop is such a great villain, so wonderfully creepy - very few supposedly evil characters have ever made me shiver the way he did. And poor Rutger Hauer - if he'd got the right roles, instead of having to portray idiots! In this movie, you can see what he'd have been capable of, if treated accordingly.

You absolutely must watch Merlin some day - it's such a charming show. Yes, there are stupid things in it, too, but I can easily overlook them because the sum of the parts has turned out so lovely.
