Central heating has finally been repaired - and not a moment too soon. We've experienced a 15-degree temperature drop compared with last week - and I mean it in Celsius, I can't even begin to guess what that would mean in Fahrenheit! - and were freezing our backsides off. Yay for advanced technology!

Have left the [livejournal.com profile] kavtolanon comm. I loved it as long as it was dedicated to a much-abused character, but since it has been turned into a support comm for the actor and his other roles, I'm just no longer interested. I like Ben Cotton, but I don't like him that much that I'd want to waste my time with reading posts about his other roles I'd never see anyway. Besides, the comm didn't fulfil one percent of my hopes for similarly-minded readers and discussion partners, so it's not so as if I'd give up anything of importance.

I'm considering doing the same with the [livejournal.com profile] welovezelenka comm. It still serves its original purpose, but it's been every bit the disappointment the Kav comm has, so what's the point in remaining there?

Went with Mum to the doctor again, to get the results of her latest blood test. They're very good, thank God! She's gaining her strength back with amazing speed. Who knows, perhaps I'll get my bed back before Christmas, eh?

Autumn break is only a week from now. Nine days without school, without kids, without colleagues... HEAVEN! I'm seriously tempted not to leave the bed for those nine days, but, of course, it will be insanely hectic again: nine days in which I'll try to catch up with everything I hadn't managed to do in the last two and a half months. Still, NO SCHOOL!!! Isn't that just fantastic?

I keep saying universities would be so much nicer without the students! Of course when I was at University of Warwick I used to also complain about how dead the campus got when the undergraduates went away. It wasn't so much the lack of people, as the fact that just because the undergraduates went home, the university closed down a lot of the catering out-lets and the supermarket cut back its opening hours.

As for central heating -- I am very pleased to hear yours is working again. When I moved into my current flat, going on two months ago now, they were going to double-glaze the windows. (This is a major bragging point for English flats/houses -- having spent most of my life in Sweden I tend to think of double-glazing as the most basic of possible windows and only triple glazing or specially coated glass worth mentioning.) They did do the kitchen, living room and bed room after about three weeks, but I am still waiting for the work-men to do the bath-room. It was OK in August and September when it was quite warm here, but now the autumn chill is in the air and I would like my bathroom to be nice and warm in the mornings. I have trouble enough getting up without freezing!

Also: Yay for your Mum recovering well! \o/

Double glazing is supposed to be an achievement? Good Lord, it's been standard for decades even over here!

Stupid central heating has crashed three times in the last four days - I hope they've got the problem under control by now. It's not funny, alternating between an unheated flat and a barely heated workplace. I'm permanently cold!

Central heating is an achievement in this country! And they still haven't got around to 'mixer taps', i.e. taps that actually mix the hot and the cold water. We are also supposed to be grateful for having radiators in the bathroom (even if I can't seem to get mine to actually get warm, let alone hot) and not having carpets in the kitchen and bathroom.

I hope your central heating problem has got fixed by now. Is the barely heated workplace an intentional choice by the management (to save money/keep children to cold to play up/some other excuse) or is there a chance of it getting dealt with? My new office, I changed jobs about two months ago, seems to be permanently just a little too cold to be comfortable; I can't decide if this is because it is set that way, because I am more sensitive to the cold or perhaps an issue with the control system.

I think it must be a glitch in the system. My classroom is always hot in the summer and icy cold in the winter, as it's very small and is situated in the corner of the building, which means it has two walls immediately to the street, and the windows aren't exactly isolated. But this year many other rooms are uncomfortably cool as well. The only exception is the teachers' room, where some idiot colleagues with midlife problems and heat waves keep leaving the windows open... *le sigh*

Really glad to hear the ongoing good news about your mum. Although if recovering means being kicked out of bed, perhaps she should delay it? :)

Well, she's got a perfectly good bed of her own - one that's big enough for her but way too short for me, so by all love, I'll be happy when we'll finally switch beds again.

But I'm very happy about her steady recovery, too.

We need it *now*! Temperatures falling from 13+ to 4- or so within two days, with rain and stormy wind are not fun!

We've just put on the heat here this past week, so I'm glad to know yours is fixed, with Winter clearing stirring her chilly brews! And I'm delighted to hear that Mum is mending so well. Please give her my best.

I agree that, with so little spare time in life, one should focus on things that are rewarding and enjoyable. If a community is no longer providing that for you, why spend precious hours for naught?

Speaking of Preciousssss... NINE DAYS! WOO HOO!!!!

Nice to hear that your central heating is up again, the central heating here is down and will be for some time as a pump is exchanged.

I used to look forward to the Authumn leave, as it was the only one during the Authumn semester and made it feel longer than the Spring one. Even with all the catching up I guess it will do you good.

It is good to hear that your mum is getting better, she deserves it in my opinion. *hugs to both of you*
