Wishlist 01 - Books, Part 1

Well, this is something that's gonna be really long. It'll take up maybe more entries. But it will help me to keep track on my new (or planned) achievements, as I'll simply turn the title of the ones I manage to get hold of into bold font - and admire my success afterwards. *g*

Yes, I'm a strange, strange person. Hitting the half-century mark doesn't help with that, of course, but then I was strange as an adolescent already, so I probably can't blame my age, eh?

So, let's start with the good old sci-fi stuff, shall we?

As I re-read this entry, I got a little bit schocked how greedy I am. And I haven't even gone any further than general Star Trek background trivia and some Original series novels. Well, at least I know why I'll be working at least ten more years. The bucks for this dark passion must be earned somehow. *g*

I've read and enjoyed an original fantasy series by Robert E. Vardeman, the Demon Crown trilogy. I had no idea he wrote Star Trek novels.

I think whenever they run into a writers block with original stuff or need some big bucks, these writers lower themselves to write fanfiction. With the only difference that they're paid for it handsomely. *g*

Oh, and Vardeman and some of the above authors are exceptions (which is the reason why I want their books), but as a rule, fanfiction is usually better. Fans, at least, are interested in what they're writing about and know the source material a lot more thoroughly. Just take a look at altariel1's Deep Space Nine books. One sees that she started off as a devoted fan. ;))

Jean Lorrah (the author of The Vulcan Academy Murders) started off as a fan: I actually have some of her old fanfiction novels in my basement closet. (Yes, I remember the good old days when Star Trek fanfiction came out in actual printed zines, and you found out who had written new stuff by sending off for the latest copy of the Star Trek Welcommittee newsletter.)
