We've been very fortunate, so far
Jan. 19th, 2007 10:59 pmThe killer storms that hit Europe in the recent days have barely brushed Hungary. There were some strong winds, yes, some damage, but nothing that could be compared to the destruction in Germany or in the UK. It seems, sitting in a small basin surrounded by mountains does have its advantages sometimes.
I was relieved to read that you folks in the UK are all right, and that
earonn has managed well enough, too. I hope my other friends are safe, too.

But those parts of the city which are lower and somewhat of a basin, too, got flooded, if only for less than a meter above ground. Several trees went down, several cellars got flooded and had to be dried out again; and at the main train station, which was opened only half a year ago, a great beton pillar went loose and crashed down, and two other pillars got loose, to, but still hang in the facade. Luckily, nobody got hurt, but they closed the station.
Me? I spent the afternoon and night safely at home and listened to the storm howling on the outside. :)

Date: 2007-01-19 11:39 pm (UTC)We're getting bouts of strong wind every time and again all day - I hope it won't become any worse. These "Plattenbauten" weren't built for extreme stability, and I'd hate to lose my satellite dish. Yeah, petty worries, I know, but small things can be unpleasant, too.
