Housewife-y day
Apr. 23rd, 2022 06:28 pmI started with a quick sweeping of the flat and with shaking out the rugs.
Continued with making tepertős pogácsa, which is a very typical Hungarian snack - basically savoury scones, only made with yeast dough. It is very yummy, but time-consuming to make. I used the fatty layers of the Easter ham, which we don't like to eat on its own, and it turned out fantastic - aside from the usual flavours, it had that of the ham and the garlic and cuming in which the ham had been baked.
In-between, while the dough was resting (thrice 30 minutes between the folding sessions), I grated the ginger root I had bought a couple of days ago, froze it in 7 small portions (for
curiouswombat's amazing carrot soup, for Mary Berry's Panang fried chicken and other dishes I might want to make eventually) and made ginger syrup from the juice, as it would have been a real waste to throw it out. We use it to give apple compote a special flavour.
Between that and cooking lunch, Mum and I dealt with the laundry - it is always a joing effort, but as she can no longer raise her right arm above shoulder height, hanging up things is mine.
Then I cooked lunch: a lovely dish of turkey breast, mushrooms and sour cream sauce, with parsley potatoes as a side dish and grated cucumbers instead of a salad. I wasn't up to make a proper salad, and Mum can no longer eat cucumbers, unless they are grated. Not enough teeth left for that. ;))
By the time we got around to have lunch it was 3 o'clock already, and I was truly done in. So I played Solitaire on my geriatric laptop, as that's something I can at least do lying on my belly. Further plans involve watching the Master Class of the GGBO and not much else. I like the easy friendship between Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, even though he could easily be her son.
