My friend Evie went to the hospital for a (non Covid-related) blood test. She overheard the nurses discussing the fact that 90% of all people who are tested for Covid test positive. Of course, none of this gets mentioned in the media. What we don't talk about doesn't exist, right?

Other than that, we had the usual cleaning frenzy today, and I made a food run, so that I won't have to leave the house until Friday. I don't intend to, either.

I've made the main photo mats for the original baby book, but I'm not happy with the outcome. I'll have to remove the sticker numbers and replace them with something less... garish. We'll see.

Oh, here they tell us about all the positive texts and how bad the situation is.
Though compared to other countries it's not that bad.
But the restrictions remain.

We have practically no restrictions over here, save for having to wear a mask in the shops and on the buses and such. The results are easily guessed...

Another of my chums in the UK has tested positive, along with her young son and most worryingly, her husband who is in primary progressive multiple sclerosis. Honestly, every time I open facebook it is to see another UK chum or acquaintance in my UK circle catch omicron.

Stay safe! Your precautions seem to be working so far.

The good news is that most of them are not ill, just get a positive LFT test as we are all testing so often.

Husband tested yesterday before his out-patient appointment, I tested on Sunday before going to church and then this morning before going to the dentist, grandchildren test routinely twice a week as they are at school... and so on.

Um... actually my friends have been ill. Some have long covid. My friend's husband with MS is currently in a scary situation and my chum who had a liver transplant in 2020 and caught it in 2021 recovered eventually but really struggled, I am hoping she does not catch it again. My elderly mother has just completed cancer treatment and I am worried she will catch it. My friends with medical conditions are scared. But yeah... good news, drop the masks, most people are not ill.

Well personally I regard most people not being as ill any more as very good news, having known people who were hospitalised, and a couple with long covid, from the period before we were almost all vaccinated.

The numbers here are awful. I only allow myself to check the news once a day, I was becoming so distraught reading current events. Still, there’s something even more frightening about having the numbers hidden. That sounds awful.

In this country lying to the population just about everything has been the main method of politics for at least half a century... or longer.

Wow, 90% is high. We're only at about 50%. Do they test a lot of people there?

No idea. And it might have been the case in just that one hospital. There's simply no way to know.

The good news is that you sound to be at the peak of the curve. Omicron numbers spike high but fast, so your country's numbers will probably come down in the next few days, if they are not dropping already.

Our on-island figures for positive tests are published daily. It must be difficult to make your own decisions on what feels safe and what doesn't if you don't get the figures.

We honestly don't know what to believe anymore. The physiotherapist lady (who works in a big hospital) says that why the numbers are high, the cases are a lot less serious than they used to be, so there's hope. *sigh*

Ours are definitely a lot less serious — the combination of omicron seeming to be milder, and almost all of us being vaccinated, has kept almost everyone out of hospital.

Currently, out of our population of around 85,000, 6 people in hospital are positive for covid. This doesn't even mean that 6 of them have been admitted because of the covid — they might have anything from a stroke to appendicitis, or even in the maternity unit, but have tested positive before or on admission.

Officially, at the moment, over 600 people tested positive in the past 10 days and so are classed as 'active cases'. Anecdotally it is very likely that half of them are actually asymptomatic; a lot of people need to do self testing twice a week, and so realise they are positive even though otherwise they would never know!

Our numbers are published daily, but the govt moves the milestones so it seems like less cases. "Number of Deaths" used to be total for our state, and now it's overnight but if you missed that announcement, it looks like it's less. "Active cases" used to be total and now it's the last 7 days only. Again, it's the same format so it looks like the numbers are improving.

That sounds very frustrating.

We are a tiny island with only one main hospital and one PCR testing centre etc. Until recently we had a plethora of information released daily but, when omicron hit, the numbers were rising so quickly it was actually hard to update everything daily — so some info is now weekly, and positive Lateral Flows are now recorded as it is no longer required that you then have a PCR. But daily we get this. (You have to read the small print to know active means a positive test in the last 10 days, but it is the same measure they have used since they began publishing data.)

Of course, in a small community, we get a feel for the way it is going by 'how many do I know of who are currently isolating?' And the general feeling at the moment is of numbers going down — and a lot of them feel fine but their regular Lateral Flow test was positive. People are still cautious, the town centre feels very quiet, and we are all used to testing ourselves with lateral flow kits if we do go anywhere; getting messages on WhatsApp groups like 'sorry, won't be there tonight — positive LFT!' is currently part of life :(

We do between 600000 to more than a million tests a day, numbers are high but not yet terrifying. Highest numbers are in those states where tourism is still working., so technically I am in the thick of things.

As someone who works in a hospital, you'd be horrified at the number of staff who have covid but are at work because they're not sick enough to stay home and we are THAT short of staff. You won't be reading about that any time soon.
