Mum seemed to be in a very good mood in the morning, which was a relief. So I pulled myself together and did a bit of crafting: I started seaming the finished quiet book pages. [livejournal.com profile] elwenlj is right - hand-sewing does have something peaceful. Even if you are sewing felt. *g*

The rest of the day wasn't very busy. I haven't cooked today - I had leftovers, including the canned soup I've been eating for four days by now, and I still do have a portion for tomorrow - and in the afternoon all that stress caught up with me, so I took a nap. It felt wonderful.

M, our choir leader dropped by with a bag of apples - another one of these mysterious, masked meetings in front of the house - which is very nice of her. Only that I'll have to cook litres of apple sauce and freeze them because I can't eat that many alone. But it will give me something to do, so it's okay.

In the late afternoon Mum was a bit more subdued than in the morning, but I think it came from the fact that she, too, napped in the afternoon and was a bit confused if it was morning or evening. This morning she was briefly up and did a tiny little walk (only a few steps) with the walking aid, although she isn't allowed to put her weight (such as it is) on the broken leg just yet. Unfortunately, the other leg is the one with the decades-long knee problems, so walking will be a real pain for quite some time yet. We still hope and pray that the bone will hold and that there won't be any complications.

The weather is really crazy. One would think it's April, not February. In the night, it was raining. In the morning, we had bright sunshine. In the late afternoon - including now - it's been raining, on and off a bit. So far, the balcony holds our. *fingers crossed*

I'm tired, despite having slept an extra hour today. And I still have some washing-up to do. Have I mentioned how I despise housework? Even if it fills out dead time, it never ends, and the results are gone before one has really finished. *sigh*

Walking already? That's really good going! It all sounds very positive, no wonder you can get some relief at last.

Some sort of apple pie must be in the works? For mum and the nurses?

I'm not sure they'd allow homemade stuff for the nurses. And the only negative aspect is that Mum doesn't seem to have much of an appetite. Which is understandable, but it worries me that she might become too weak.

Aw yes, applesauce, that will keep you busy. Which yeah I guess is good to distract you from worrying but also I can completely understand you just being exhausted and needing extra sleep. Worrying is exhausting, and you're bound to be worrying even if just subconsciously.

Hope the weather remains mild so the hospital visits, when you can make them, won't be hindered further by the weather.

It's good to hear your mother can walk a little bit already, that sounds like a hopeful sign!

I'm very fortunate that the hospital is so easy to reach from where I live but yeah, mild weather would be helpful.

I'm so very glad that Mum can already make a few steps, yes; let's hope that the bone will hold.

I am sure your mum will be okay. My mother had the same accident, of course she had been younger then but was a bad case of osteoporosis already, with many more fractures to come. But her leg held, and so will your mum´s. Important thing is to not put too much strain on it.

Thank you, this is comforting to hear. I can't help worrying; it reminds me the whole ordeal we went through with Grandma 25 years ago. I just hope Mum will do better.

They drag the patients out of bed very early in these days. Apparently, it supports the healing.

Even 40 years ago when, as a young staff nurse, I worked on the female orthopaedic ward, we tried to get people onto their feet within 48 hours if they had metalwork put in. It lessened their chances of pneumonia for a start — which was what sometimes killed the elderly ladies who had to be treated in traction - it also improved the circulation and helped prevent muscle weakness.

I am really pleased to hear that she seems to be recovering more or less as expected. She will probably eat better once she gets home — you make food the way she likes it, and she will be able to take just a little exercise, even around the room, to help it 'go down'.

I just got a call from the hospital. They're going to release her somewhen during this week! On the one hand I am happy to have her back. On the other hand I am scared shitless how we'll manage on our own. *sigh*

I'm doing my best. It's just hard that I can't see with my own eyes how she's actually doing. Or just being with her and encouraging her.

I, too, hate housework. Most of the time my home gets a cosmetic zip around with the vacuum cleaner, and that's it.

Best wishes to your Mum as she takes her first tiny steps. It did seem shocking to me that the hospital people are having her do this already, but from friends' accounts, this seems to be the approach nowadays. Good luck, Mum!

Also wishing you good luck with that dratted balcony. So far, it's holding — good. My fingers are crossed too that it stays that way.

It sounds like a lot of apples. I hope you find enjoyment in making the applesauce. It's a good project to occupy the time with some good rewards. Your place will smell wonderful from the apples cooking, and then you'll have home-made applesauce to enjoy!

Glad to hear your Mum is getting back on her feet. Even if only a few steps, that is a positive sign.
