"Chinese" party
Jun. 12th, 2004 10:18 pmWell, the party is over. It was a great success, although Cirdan would have laughed her head off hearing us trying to sing that song I transcribed from a disk. We sounded like lovesick cats. Then we played Rommie (with little wooden chips instead of cards - the cousins of my Mum made those when they were kids), ate a lot and laughed a lot. It was nice. We agreed that a witch party at Halloween would be a must.
I've typed up the fragment of Chapter 16 of "Kansas" and consulted with my co-conspirator about the Secret Project(TM). It was a nice but exhausting day. I think reading some strange Houston Knights fic and going to bed early would be in order.
Tomorrow, it'll be all about politics as we are going to vote for our Europe Parliament representatives. It's about time that it'll be done. The recent campaign contained so much mud-throwing that it was almost worthy a fandom war. *shakes head* Politicians.

Date: 2004-06-13 02:31 am (UTC)Anyway, her results are very good, even so, and I hope she gets the scholarship next year again. It's not very much money, approximately 150 Euro for the whole term, but for a 15-year-old kid it's a great deal. I'm very sorry that we can't apply for this other girl(the one whose photo is in Edhellond's Photos section, titled "My little Silvan girl"). She has two younger brothers and an older one for whose studies the parents have to pay, too. She could have finally had some money for herself.
Alas, one of the requirements is that they have an average results of 4.5 or above for the last two terms, and in the most recent one she only had 4.47. Grrrr! (Hungarian grading system is based on numbers from 1-5. 5 is the best grade.)
As for "Kansas", yep, I'm working on it. Since my Tolkien muse is dead at the moment, I'm trying to finish other unfinished projects. Chapter 16 focusses on Garibaldi and Ayala again.

Date: 2004-06-13 04:02 am (UTC)If she keeps the way she is now, I might even set up a youth account for her while she is in secondary school. That would come handy when she wants to go to college four years later. I have no close relatives that would be worth supporting, and I can't take my money to the grave with me anyway. She won't become rich from what little I can offer, but it would make her life a little easier.

Date: 2004-06-13 04:07 am (UTC)Leaving your books and other nice stuff to an intelligent appreciative young girl sounds like a good idea to me! And so does a youth account for her to go to college.
A very nice thought, Soledad!

Date: 2004-06-13 04:16 am (UTC)I have to wait until she gets an ID, of course, so that she'd be able to get her money later. And I intend to follow her way in secondary school, to see how she is doing. I plan this project as some kind of private scholarship - the level of support will depend on her individual efforts at school. It has been my experience that kids appreciate things they had to work for a lot more. And the fact hat she will be rewarded for her efforts in a practical way should be inspiring. Or so I hope.
You know, I was thinking of joining the Hungarian Tolkien Society. I went to their website and checked the requirements. They demand a membership fee that I find a little too high, so I decided against joining. I'll invest the same sum of money into the future of this kid; I think it'd give me more satisfaction. Yes, I'm a selfish person. *g*

Date: 2004-06-13 04:54 am (UTC)I took a look at her photo and she looks to be a very intelligent girl. Very bright eyed, and I bet inquisitive!

Date: 2004-06-13 06:49 am (UTC)Of course, she is two or three years older now, but looks basically the same. She's an imp, definitely. Very good at maths, reads a lot, is a member of the school choir and the art course (she draws well). Plus, whatever extra work there is the others won't do, she is willing to help with it. I guess having two younger siblings and an overworked Mum does count in this department.

Date: 2004-06-12 09:27 pm (UTC)Oh, and now you'll have the Hallowe'en party for sure, I shall start thinking about little things to send over.
You're quite right: politics *is* a giant fandom... unfortunately, we can't just log off and ignore them, especially if they are recently dead presidents...but that's another story.
Or 50 million stories, it seems, living in the US. Which is why I didn't even realize Europe was having parliamentary elections. Argh. To know about the World Beyond Reagan this week, one had to listen to BBC Radio. Well, good luck - I hope you get a decent Parliament out of it. We have many months to go before the last lump of mud is thrown in our elections.

Date: 2004-06-13 02:35 am (UTC)The parties have been fighting for weeks to get as many of their own people in as possible. Needless to say, it's a financial thing, mostly. EP representatives are rather handsomely paid. For what they get for a day I have to work five months or so.
