Today was my penultimate baking day. Only two sorts today, this one and this one, but since I didn't get up in time after a semi-sleepless night, it took half the morning. (Pictures tomorrow.)

The banana cookies produced such an ungodly amount that I had to offer the excess to various neighbours, all of whom were very happy with it, except one stupid b*tch who refused. I won't give her anything in the future, ever! The others were more than willing to take what was offered, thus I'm a very popular person in my neighbourhood right now. Of course, to the two families with young children/grandchildren I brought a large plate with a wide selection of my baking, not just the banana cookies - but that was because of the children!

Anyway, I had a masked open-air meeting with my friend Evie again, exchanging Christmas gifts (I'm sure we're being watched by now). I gave her a large box of Christmas cookies and a 2-person Zsolnay coffee service, which I got for my retirement but never used. We already have lots of china anyway, and neither Mum nor I are into Zsolnay. But Evie loved it and was very happy with it. She brought us a double helping of sausages, black pudding and liverwurst, which she buys on the market near her house. It's much better than what you can get in the supermarket; a lot less spicy, which is better for Mum's digestion.

So, another day that went by like nothing, and tomorrow I'll really have to go and get myself a Christmas tree before it will be too late.

My Good Things of the day:
- successful baking session;
- the look on the girl's face next door when she saw her large plate of cookies;
- meeting Evie.

I've never made banana biscuits but I have a yummy recipe for banana bread, which also freezes well. (Kein Brot, sondern ein Kastenkuchen)

Nice you got to meet your friend and exchange gifts.

I've made banana bread once as Kastenkuchen, but it was too heavy for my taste.

Both of these sound very tasty! Lucky neighbors.

Today has been kinda hectic for me since we're going into lockdown on Wednesday, so I had to run some unavoidable errands (technically, I also need to go downtown for a new computer mouse but I've resigned myself to having to order one online now and hope it's a good fit, not gonna battle the crowds in the middle of a pandemic while two weeks' worth of Christmas shoppers are squeezing themselves into the stores in two days)

Before lockdown news, today had been scheduled as baking day and I decided to make time for this anyway, so now we have rum balls, at least.

Maybe, wth some luck, I can still bring some stuff to the SOS Kinderdorf charity store tomorrow before they have to shut down.

The stores will be living hell in the next two days, I assume. Good luck with your trip to the charity store. And yay for rum balls!

I have no doubt. It's not worth the stress plus the increased risk of catching Covid. My mouse is still kinda working for now, I just have to hit the button several times or press down hard. Maybe I'll be able to wait until stores open again, even.

I've made banana bread and banana cake but never banana cookies, I bet yours were great.
Most of my neighbors would never bother bringing me any cookies, maybe they're not friendly because I don't have kids?

Well, we've lived on the same floor since 1977, so we've grown pretty close with most of them. Why the stupid b*tch didn't accept her share is still a mystery for me.

I'll bet that was fun to see.

We used to exchange cookies and cakes when I worked, but that has been awhile. The closest now is Mardi Gras in Feb/Mar when we all have King cakes (coffee cake). There is a plastic baby inside the cake and whoever has the slice with the baby must supply the next cake. As to Christmas, my neighborhood has a Christmas parade (the local fire Department trucks and a truck collecting presents for kids) and on one special night in December, we all put out white bag luminaries from 6-8 pm. That same night, there are hot chocolate stations throughout the neighborhood that we can visit to wish each other happy holidays. This year, they will still have the stations, but we must all keep our social distance. I lucked out these last two years as the station was at my next door neighbor's house, so I did not have to walk far. I may just stand in my yard and wave this year. There is usually cake and cookies at the station that someone either bought or made, but nothing at all like the creations you bake. I could not find such variety even if I went to a local bakery!

I can only repeat: this is my consolation prize for everything that was lost this Christmas. Usually I don't perform quite such an extravaganza, but I needed something this year. Something extraordinary.

Maybe the reluctant neighbour was being overly paranoid about the virus. I know I have withdrawn more and more as time has gone on.

She isn't overly paranoid talking to people from a distance of barely 10 cm without wearing a mask, so I don't think that's the reason. Besides, it's exceedingly bad manners in my eyes. If I don't want to eat something made by someone else I still accept it, thank for it politely - and throw it into the rubbish bin if I have to. But I'd never refuse it into the face of someone who wanted to give it to me in good faith.
