I've been watching re-runs of the Great British Bake-Off (the original one) every evening of this week and it caused in me the great desire to bake something, despite the abysmal heat. So I gave the Germguglhupf (a yeast dough wreath with candied fruits) another try. What I forgot was the fact that the eggs we buy through our school are XXL-sized. So I had to add more dry ingredients to the mix. And more dry ingredients. And even more dry ingredients. In the end, it swallowed at least 600 gr flour instead of the 400 gr required by the recipe, and due to the warm weather, the dough rose to extraordinary proportions. It grew out of the dish three times!

The result is this fairly oversized piece of baking goods:

It grew out of the baking tin, too, although it has a diameter of 26 cm! So I halved it and gave both of our neighbours a quarter of it each. Even so, we'll be eating it for at least two days; for breakfast, most likely.

It turned out extraordinary well, by the way: feather light, fluffy and very, very yummy.

Wow! That's indeed a monstrous cake but he looks delicious! I had planned to make little choux this week-end but I read that heat is not good for the choux batter so it will have to wait.

I've never heard of choux. What are they?

Never in my life have I managed to make such a huge, fluffy yeast cake before. It was well worth the effort.

Unexpected results, but it sounds great. I was thinking it would be light-bodied after all that rising!
Anything that's very, very yummy is a success in my book.
Brave you, baking in those hot temperatures. You were truly motivated!

I just love the Great British Baking show - especially the early seasons.
When I am in need of a pick-me-up, I rewatch them:D

Sometimes I feel this irresistible urge to bake something, and then I don't care about the circumstances. The GBBO is one of my favourite shows - but only the seasons with Mary Berry, Mel and Sue. I despise the new hosts and judges.
There's a German version of it that's great fun, too, but only once in every year, unfortunately.

I just read an article about Mel and Sue. They are starting in a TV show called 'Hitmen', a comedy.
It's on a streaming service called 'Peacock' which I am not familiar with. The article says it 'will have you seeing them in a whole new hilarious light.'

I am going to see if I can find it. I hope it's free, or I won't be seeing it.

I see that Peacock is NBC's free streaming service. Next week I will take a look!

I love GBBO but only with Mary, Mel and Sue, I really did try to give the new people a chance but they're awful.
Your cake looks wonderful!

That looks lovely - you can tell it is really light even in the picture.

I've had things that have 'grown' in the making like that in the past, too!

Honestly, it all but flows. Considering that I've wrestled with the dough roughly 40 minutes, I'm very pleased with the outcome.

That reminds me of the woman on Extra Slice who joked about her fear of yeast. Have you ever seen Extra Slice? It's a companion comedy show to the Bakeoff.

Yes, I do know Extra Slice. Some of it was quite funny, especially the pictures of the ruined cakes.

Nah, I can't bake under pressure. Baking is a means to relax for me.
