Utilizing the fact that I NOW HAVE YEAST (perhaps you've heard it already?) I decided to give Grandma's recipe a try and make a kind of Transylvanian sweet buns called Wasp Nest for the first time in my life.

This is the result:

Basically, it is a yeast dough roll, cut in 3 cm wide pieces and arranged as a wreath. The roll is filled with a spread consisting of butter and sugar, each "snail" is coated with liquid butter before putting into the oven, and when they're half-done, each one is liberally sprinkled with a mixture of warm milk, sugar and vanilla. So yeah, it isn't for the weight conscious, but it is heavenly, and I'm very proud that I've managed to get it right at the first try.

Needless to say that we had just a soup for lunch to go with such excesses.

Other than that, not much happened. Since I had two egg whites left from the Wasp Nest that I didn't want to waste, I also made financiers. With that, half the day was already gone. I did a bit of translating and wrote about two pages of the vampire crossover story, not to mention the obligatory crossword puzzles in German and Hungarian, and that was basically it.

Oh, and I talked to my goddaughter (the mother of Baby Emma) on the phone. Her mother, the proud grandma, also mailed us a few photos of Baby Emma. Such is family life in the time of the plague.

Oh, goodness, it is way beyond yummy! I'm so glad I haven't butchered it. I was a bit afraid because Grandma was fairly liberal with such mundane things as baking time and measures and stuff. *g*

Believe me, it is! Fortunately, it is also a lot of work, so I won't be tempted to make it too often, but the fact that I succeeded in the first place makes me very happy. *g*

That looks good.

I am trying to limit my baking or we will both pile weight on I fear :(

Yeah, that is a real danger in these days. I was just so enthusiastic about finally having yeast in the house that I simply had to use some of it. *g*

Looks delicious. It reminds me of the kind of Heffe Teig baking my Oma used to do. My Aunt occasionally bakes Weißbrot (Heffekranz I think it’s called in Nhd?) and those snail shaped sweet rolls (forgotten the name). Delicious! There is no yeast available here; if there were I thought I might bake bread. It would be nice to have fresh bread available, although frozen and toasted bread slices are good enough.
Sorry I have been so quiet. My illness flares up, and then I’m not good for much. I still read here, and am glad to see updates even when I can’t respond!

Zimtschnecken perhaps?

I'm sorry to hear that you're unwell. It's good to hear from you from time to time.

It is. Dangerously so. As I said, it's good that it requires lots of finickly work and waiting, so I'm not tempted to make it too often. *g*
