Once upon a time I'd have been participating in the liturgy on this day. Passion according to St. John, baring of the altar, all that stuff. It's odd not to have that anymore - not that I could blame the virus for this. Not in my case. I haven't actually participated for many, many years. Yet I still missed it every single year. As much as I've grown alienated from the church, some of the ceremonies still struck a cord in my heart.

Instead, I made my usual, extremely yummy garlic-and-cumin Easter ham today, did two diffrent pieces of translation, posted the penultimate chapter of "The Sins of the Mothers" to AO3, watched the last two episodes of "Blood Ties", had three lovely phone conversations with my colleagues, watched "Forged in Fire" and am now reading BT fanfic.

All in all a lovely day at home. I still wish at least one tv channel would show the ceremonies, though.

That would be nice. At least here in Sweden we are able to watch the televised sermons, not to mention watching them on the webb. Not the same but at the moment the best we can get. At least we can feel at wits end together. *deep sigh*

Garlic and cumin ham? Yum.

Our church had it's Maundy Thursday service tonight. They've been having services in the children's chapel since it's smaller, but it was still very powerful watching the few people there stripping and cleaning the altar.

It is a very good recipe.

The stripping of the altar is something I always found very dramatic indeed.

Not more than any other day, actually. Keeping myself busy helps.

Sounds like a good way to spend the day instead, but it's a shame it doesn't get televised in Hungary (I'm not sure if it does here either, tbh, but I'm assuming at least some webcast would have it.) Have you been able to make all your traditional Easter food as usual so far? Hefezopf aside, that is.

At least they'll show the Easter Mass tomorrow.

We usually have ham for Easter - the lovely garlic and cumin version I mentioned. I've been making it for decades. Granny was still with us when I started. Found the recipe in the Kochen und Küche magazine ages ago. And I will make the Spiegeleikuchen today. Since there will be only the two of us I decided against the usual baking orgy this year.

Yeah, that makes sense! Glad you got everything you need for the ham and Spiegeleikuchen. Maybe you can have a belated baking orgy once this entire mess is over. I'm sure your Mom would be delighted to be having visitors over again.

I've baked my Hefezopf yesterday and it turned out quite nice even with dry yeast, though the taste isn't quite the same. But still! But now I'm nearing the end of my flour stash so it's a good thing we still have plenty of cookies and such from last week. We are good on dry yeast since Mom kept buying more in past months, forgetting that she still had some at home or not getting around to the baking project it had been intended for. Who would have thought such forgetfulness would turn out useful!

We've also been using the several packages of instant mashed potatoes I had accidentally collected last year, also forgetting we still had some (and also that it doesn't really get used at Mom's since she always has potatoes at home, while I'm more of a rice and pasta person and rarely have them)

Easter ham sounds tasty.
We had the usual spinach yesterday and fish today ... haha ... not Christians but we somehow still stick to that tradition.

Rituals provide psychological stability, I'm not surprised people feel that way.

We are lucky to have televised or video services. Your ham sounds delicious. Nice to have an accomplished, yet relaxing day.

We are going to have Easter Mass on Sunday, fortunately. But I miss the Holy Thursday rituals, they are so much more intimate.
