Not much is happening lately - thank God. I like me some peace and quiet. At least within our little family, that is, because the panic about the new virus is spreading over here, too.

In noble Hungarian tradition, people have started hoarding basic food items, so I went out today and bought some flour and sugar and pasta and margarine and stuff, as long as I could. Oil is planned for the next excursion. It's not so that one could really keep that much in reserve - we don't even have a frigging pantry in this flat! But having stuff to use until the panic dies down and things return to a semi-normal state. Fortunately, we have two large supermarkets and two medium-sized grocery shops within easy reach, so the situation isn't half as bad as in small settlements.

Other than that, I've been working on the last pages of the Dollhouse quiet book - the frigging washing machine door cost me two entire days! - typing up the finished chapters of "The Sins of the Mothers", solving crossword puzzles, both in Hungarian and German (I wish I could get my hand on English ones, they're so good for vocabulary!) and watching telly. The German version of the Greet British Bake-Off is in session again, and we both enjoy it greatly. The moderator, a Dutch lady (Eenie van de Meiklokjes) is great fun, and I like both jurors, too. They're a lot nicer than Paul Hollywood & Co. Not that I'd watch TGBBO since Mary Berry left...

Anyway, I got inspired by the programme as usual and baked an apple jelly cake today. One like this (an older picture, as I don't take photos from the same cake every time):

Since I have tentative hopes that my beloved colleague E might come to visit tomorrow. If she can't make it, we'll sacrifice ourselves and eat the cake without her. ;)

You are so bad! Seriously, I do hope your friend comes to visit, but to the victor goes the spoils!

We've already given it a try, of course. We couldn't risk to offer a guest something that isn't yummy enough. ;)

As I've got older I've become keener and keener to always have a stash of food in case I'm incapacitated... perhaps with a common or garden flu, or because a random weirdness has happened.*
Of course, the ONE TIME this would have been so useful, when I fell down the stairs and was both snowed in and housebound with concussion for 3 weeks, I'd just moved house and had nothing in my cupboards! GAH!
It does require storage space though, and ideally, an extra freezer.

But on the plus side, you seem unlikely to run out of cake!

* In the UK a few years back a bunch of farmers blockaded petrol refineries with their tractors and the food shops began to empty as there was no petrol to ship in new supplies. That rather shitted me up as to how easily and quickly things can go to shit.

I can imagine. Hunting for food (at least the sorts we couldn't produce ourselves) was an integral part of my early childhood in Transylvania.

I admire your organization. I need to get some extra supplies stocked. Space is an issue - we donโ€™t have a pantry either!

I think the fact that I spent my early childhood in rather un-poetic poverty has marked me for life. I remember all too well that whenever you found something you had to buy as much of it as you could and keep it in the most unlikely things (like the flour in huge pots originally meant to cook jam) because you never knew when it would be available again. Thank God, the only part of it is the keeping things in unlikely places due to the lack of a pantry.

Uneventful, but busy days! Good for you on all fronts. The apple jelly cake looks delicious!

I've been hiding under a rock lately - caught a cold and it's dragged me down for days. But I'm lining up my pencils for Pico! I am looking forward to it:)

I know the feeling - I've been struggling with the aftermath of this stupid cold since January. It's nothing more than a somewhat clogged throat now, but still unpleasant enough.

I'll put up the "what are your plans for this season" post tomorrow. :)

Why do some colds refuse to leave gracefully after ten days as the old wives' tale clearly directs? I hope you'll be rid of the thing soon.

Goody - I'm eager for pico. Looking forward to chatting with old pico friends and meeting new ones!

The apple jelly cake looks delicious! For the past month, we have been eating the traditional Mardi Gras King cake --- store bought, as I am not a baker. Basically, a coffee cake with colored icing AND sugar on top. So, I have had way more than my usual dose of sweets, and gained a few pounds to show for it.

That is very kind of you. I'll give the online source a try first, and when they don't work for me, I'll cry for help, I promise. ;)
