Blissfully uneventful days
Feb. 27th, 2020 05:58 pmNot much is happening lately - thank God. I like me some peace and quiet. At least within our little family, that is, because the panic about the new virus is spreading over here, too.
In noble Hungarian tradition, people have started hoarding basic food items, so I went out today and bought some flour and sugar and pasta and margarine and stuff, as long as I could. Oil is planned for the next excursion. It's not so that one could really keep that much in reserve - we don't even have a frigging pantry in this flat! But having stuff to use until the panic dies down and things return to a semi-normal state. Fortunately, we have two large supermarkets and two medium-sized grocery shops within easy reach, so the situation isn't half as bad as in small settlements.
Other than that, I've been working on the last pages of the Dollhouse quiet book - the frigging washing machine door cost me two entire days! - typing up the finished chapters of "The Sins of the Mothers", solving crossword puzzles, both in Hungarian and German (I wish I could get my hand on English ones, they're so good for vocabulary!) and watching telly. The German version of the Greet British Bake-Off is in session again, and we both enjoy it greatly. The moderator, a Dutch lady (Eenie van de Meiklokjes) is great fun, and I like both jurors, too. They're a lot nicer than Paul Hollywood & Co. Not that I'd watch TGBBO since Mary Berry left...
Anyway, I got inspired by the programme as usual and baked an apple jelly cake today. One like this (an older picture, as I don't take photos from the same cake every time):

Since I have tentative hopes that my beloved colleague E might come to visit tomorrow. If she can't make it, we'll sacrifice ourselves and eat the cake without her. ;)

Date: 2020-02-27 06:44 pm (UTC)Of course, the ONE TIME this would have been so useful, when I fell down the stairs and was both snowed in and housebound with concussion for 3 weeks, I'd just moved house and had nothing in my cupboards! GAH!
It does require storage space though, and ideally, an extra freezer.
But on the plus side, you seem unlikely to run out of cake!
* In the UK a few years back a bunch of farmers blockaded petrol refineries with their tractors and the food shops began to empty as there was no petrol to ship in new supplies. That rather shitted me up as to how easily and quickly things can go to shit.
