Today, I made an excellent tomato soup, using canned chopped Italian tomatoes, canned pureed tomatoes and canned tomato juice. Adding some leftover cooking cream, an pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper, some sweeteners, some lemon juice and a pinch of paprika for the taste. The whole was based on half a tablespoon flour, half a tablespoon sunflower oil and half a tablespoon pureed onions from the tube and seasoned with parsley. Which I also bought cut and dried and ready to use.

Real gourmets would die from outrage, I know. But it cut down cooking time to half an hour, which meant that I had time left to make a sorry excuse of a Russian Creme Torte, using cream powder sold in pre-packaged form and Granny's idiot proof sponge cake. It has probably nothing to do with the original, as I didn't check an accurate recipe and thus left out the candied fruits and raisins, but since we aren't great fans of those, I think we'll be quite happy with the dumbed-down mini version.

There'll be a pic tomorrow; I'm just too ashamed to put it into the same entry from where you you can go to the real item. *g*

Other than that, I've finished re-reading "A Murder is Announced", translated half a page, took Mum to church and performed the final touches (aka decoration) on six Russian dolls. Oh, and I printed out some sheet music, since choir life will re-start with a vengeance on Monday (with the Oldies) and Tuesday (with the main choir), respectively.

Pureed onions from the tube? Never seen this around here. Good, I'm afraid I'd eat it right from the tube :D

We've both pureed onions and garlic awaible in tube, which is a good thing, as I no longer have to cry why cooking. My eyes are quite sensitive against onions. When I was working in the cloister kitchen, I sobbed for days over the peeling of onions, until Schwester Betha reassigned me to the blessedly harmless cauliflowers. *g*

Nothing wrong with canned goods sometimes - I have to admit we use canned tomatoes for pasta sauce as well.

I've made tomato soup fresh from scratch exactly once never again. It was a dirty, tedious job, took all morning and the result completely lacked any taste.

Coincidentally, I have tomato rice soup on tonight's menu! Also use canned tomatoes--this time of year they have much more flavour than the fresh ones, at least here. I use a very finely chopped carrot for sweetness--it works. Unfortunately, the creme torte is not on my menu , nor is it in my repetoire. :( You really have such full days.

My version of the Russian Creme Torte is idiot proof, since I made the creme "aus der Tüte", as the Germans would say, and I used Grandma's sponge cake that never goes wrong... unless you forget to take it out of the oven. *g*

Grandma's sponge cake is the easiest thing I can imagine.
