No rest for the wicked
Dec. 17th, 2019 09:09 pmWe had a beautiful, mild and sunny day - 14°C, which is a bit ridiculous in December, but much appreciated nonetheless. So Mum and I decided to go out and take care of some long overdue things.
First, we went to the doctor's and had a godawful lot of medicine prescribed - mostly for her, of course, but one for me as well, and some general stuff like the pills against headache and the likes. Then we went to the pharmacy and bought the medicines... and got a mild shock when we had to pay. It seems that, like everything else, medicine is getting more and more expensive each time.
We then boarded the tram and went to a traffic knot where I bought my 30-day-ticket for next month. The old one only runs out on December 20, but at least we had this out of our hair.
The next step was the place where we always had our things like shoes, bags, umbrellas, etc., fixed - only to find a sign that they were closing and won't accept any more stuff for fixing. It was an unpleasant surprise, as Mum wanted to have the sole of her most comfortable pair of shoes fixed. Now we have to find a new place. *sigh*
As a consolation, we went to Stühmer's Café for some hot chocolate. It was yummy, but of considerably lower quality than a year or two ago when we first tried it. It wasn't really hot, and it seemed somehow diluted, too. So, this is another place we will probably strike from our to-go list. That list is getting depressingly short lately. :(
We then boarded the bus to cross the Danube to Pest (we live on the Buda side of the capital) because Mum wanted some warm tights and she believed that they could be found in one particular shop for a reasonable price. Well... what we saw there was insanely expensive, not to mention ugly, so we didn't buy any.
Since we were in the City already, I suggested that we walk along the shopping mail to the Christmas fair on Vörösmarty Square. Mum gave up shortly before reaching the actual square and opted for sitting on a bench and waiting for me. I hopped around the fair, found it unreasonably expensive and very disappointing. I suggested to Mum, though, that we don't go back the same way but take a shortcut to the terminus of the tram that would take us directly home.
To our surprise, there were lots of booths along that shortcut, so that she got to see some of the fair, after all. Plus, when we reached Deák Square, there was another fair, bigger and more colourful than the much hyped-over one. We didn't have the time (and any strength left) to take a look, as I had to go back to school to the choir's Christmas party in the afternoon, but decided to go back on Thursday, assuming the weather would cooperate.
Said Christmas party was a nice enough affair. We watched the recording of our concert from Saturday and had lots of cookies that the various choir members produced. The choir secretary's hubby is a conditor, and he baked us a yummy cheesecake, too, so it was really festive. M, our choir director, loved the little journal I made for her, so everyone had a good time.

Date: 2019-12-17 10:06 pm (UTC)I hope you'll enjoy that other Christmas market when you go on Thursday. Mom and I are planning to go to her town's market after we see Star Wars tomorrow, provided the streets aren't slippery already by the time we get out. But we're not expecting much, the market here is never any nice.
Glad to hear the Christmas party was enjoyable, at least.

Date: 2019-12-19 02:55 am (UTC)We don't have a cobbler in my town, but there's a good shoe store that does some repairs in another town about half an hour down the road, thank goodness. If they closed, I'd be very upset! I hope you are able to find a new place that's good.
It sounds like you and your Mum did a lot of walking, even if she did sit down while you checked out the Christmas fair. I'm glad the weather was nice!
