As in my very own Star Trek crossover and AU Yahoo Group
We have 35 members right now. During the last two weeks or so the number of members had doubled. And at least 18 of them are guys. There might be a few more among those who didn't specify their gender in their Yahoo profile. That's a new experience for me, after the almost excusively female Tolkien fandom.
Most of them are in deep lurker mode, of course. Guys aren't as good in chatting as women are. The only one of them who semi-regularly posts is a fellow writer, creator of one of the most complicated Battlestar Galactica/TNG/B5/DS9/Voyager/Forbidden Planet/whoknowswhatelse crossovers.
We agreed that it's interesting to see the differences between male and female interests in the same subject. He writes very well - I like his stuff. He likes mine, too, and that's a compliment. But there are great differences indeed. He writes action and conflict, the big picture even. He has an amazing grasp on technical detail, timeline accuracy and is able to keep the whole thing in his head. (Or he makes very good notes.)
I write about character interaction, emotions, little intrigues. Small stuff. Subtle hints. I'm more willing to modify characterization as opposed to the shows. He's not always happy with that, but that's his prerogative. I think we see the shows themselves very differently, and even more so the characters. He might be right. This might be because of the difference between male and female POVs. But it's very inspiring.
After almost a year, I've finally come around to write the actual beginning of my Treksmut piece. I've discussed the schematics here already:

I've written the Foreword and 5 pages of the first chapter. Maybe if I keep out the graphic details, I can post it to ff.net. Of course, I could post the conplete thing to Adultfanfiction.net, but somehow I feel hesitant to post there. And I don't feel like posting under a different pen name. I don't know why.
