Let's party!

People who've known me for a longer time know that I'm throwing a virtual birthday party every year. It starts on October 1 and closes on October 9 (my actual birthday) at midnight, sharp. When I checked my LJ calendar, I realized with a mild shock that I've been doing this for the last 12 years! Where has the time gone?

Unfortunately, last year's attempt failed, big time, so I decided that I'll throw just a very small party this year. Starting tonight and closing tomorrow at midnight. Just so that the tradition won't get lost entirely, with all the people who have abandoned LJ (and me) in the course of all those years.

The goal, as always, is to make as many collapsed threads on as many pages as possible; only that this year we'll do everything in a little more than one day. Hopefully, LJ won't crash the party, as it happened in one year when the comments became too many for it to handle. (My heart bled...)

Let's talk about things we're interested in, let's post pictures just for fun, link videos or whatnot. I'm getting older and need fun (and love) to go on. *g*

I'll open a few topics below, just to start the fun, but everyone is entitled to open a topic of their own; we need 25 first-level comments for one page, IIRC.

Feel free to spread the word on your own journal, new guests are always welcome. It isn't exactly a friendzy, but meeting new people is always delightful.

Topic #1 - Cake exchange

I used to collect photos of "cakes of the world" onto a flickr album, photos I had taken myself, of cakes I had sampled. I haven't updated the album for ages though, and it is a mystery why I had this cake fascination as I don't have a sweet tooth and don't much care for cakes!

This is not the greatest photo but the subject is wonderful. It's not a proper festival without funnel cake. They used to only be made locally supposedly being a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition but now they are nation wide. Maybe even more so. I think it a great addition to the table of a birthday party.

Topic #2 - A fun story

Tell me about something funny that's happened to you lately - or that keeps happening to you.

Here is mine: Pinterest regularly mails me pins about which they think I would like. They're not actually wrong; the hilarious part is, though, that more often than not they mail me my own pins. Just yesterday, they mailed me 14 pins of cakes and cookies - every single one was mine!

Ok, how about coffee? How do you drink it at home, and what do you order at a cafe?
I drink plunger (French press) coffee at home, with almond milk. At a cafe, I will order a cafe latte most frequently, although occasionally I will drink a macchiato. All with almond milk, of course.

It depends. When I write a lot in English, I sometimes (not often) dream in English, too. Back, when I lived in Germany, I regularly dreamed in German.

Wait, since today is your actual birthday, I can now properly wish you a Happy Birthday as well! This will be your first in retirement, right? Another good reason to celebrate!

Indeed! Mum and I went to eat in a restaurant called Guru. I've been planning to go there for months, because they have Palatschinken auf Dijoner Art, that's chicken pancakes in Dijon style for those who don't speak German. But we waited for a properly festive occasion because the place isn't cheap. It was great, though. Mum coldn't even finish her three-cheese-pancake, so they packed for her the rests and we'll have it for lunch tomorrow.

All the cakes you guys brought look so yummy. I'll have a little of each. Let's have them with some great coffee--I've brought a coffee service for the occasion. (I'd love to collect this stuff, but space/money is not available. They don't make this service anymore, or I might have been tempted ;). I have some beautiful things from my mother but use them so seldom....)

Has anyone ever done any fandom-related crafts like knitting or cross stitch?

I keep seeing very cute fannish embroidery patterns on Etsy or knitting patterns for scarves or hats. I've been wanting to try that for ages but never got around to it.

I don't do fandom related knitting/crochet/cross stitch, though I do all three crafts--probably because I don't really have fandom collections so wouldn't know what to do with the results, though I agree with you, there's some really cute amigurumi etc patterns out there! I did however save this Tardis scarf pattern (http://knitty.com/ISSUEss12/PATTbigger.php)because it's pretty and useful and it's subtle enough that only a fellow fan would recognize it :)

I haven't found anyone to make it for--maybe I should just make it for myself!

Has anyone here been reading a good book lately?

I only keep collecting books instead (well, ebooks, since I have so little space for paper books) since I never find the time to read.

I'm about to start re-reading the Inda series by Sherwood Smith, as there is a new book out that follows on in the same universe out now (which I am very excited about), and I like rereading to make sure I pick up on references and stuff.

I spent the earlier part of this year doing a lot of sorting and getting rid of physical books (I mean I still have loads, but at least now I have fewer that I'm not interested in reading, are appalling, or (for non-fiction) so out of date to be fairly useless) - as moving make me realise quite how many I'd accumulated, and especially that I had over 400 that I had not read. :S
