I got this little darling from Mum today:

It is an Easy Home mini sewing machine that I hope to put to good use by seaming my quiet book pages. Of course, I'll have to consult my crafty colleagues first, as the last time I used a sewing machine (an regular-sized one) was more than 30 years ago, back in the cloister, where we made lots of altar cloths with Sister Walburg. But I hope it's the same thing as with riding a bike (which I can't, unfortunately), and I'll figure out the tricks eventually.

My birthday isn't for another two weeks or so, but these cuties were on sale in the ALDI supermarket. I got up extra early today (two whole hours earlier than usual) to be there when the nearest one opened its doors, so that I would snatch me one of the little helpers. As it turned out, the supermarket opened half an hour earlier than I remembered, but there were still lots of the minis, so I got mine all right.

Now to figure out how it actually works!

*fingers crossed*
I've quite forgotten how complicated sewing machines can be.

Assuming my colleagues can help me figure out how it works. *g*

That is adorable!
You lived in a cloister? Were you a nun or a student? Now I'm worried I might offend you with some of the crass things I say :P

I wanted to become a nun. It didn't work out, so I left after two years, before finishing novitiate. No need to worry, I've become quite the dirty-minded old hag in the meantime.;))

That is very interesting! When I was a kid I had very romanticized ideas about being a nun. I wasn't Catholic so they were ill informed. I imagined it to be something like a Medieval monk writing illuminated versions of the bible by candlelight, eating sparsely and keeping a vow of silence. I still was 50/50 between devoting my life in such servitude on one hand or becoming a complete hedonist on the other. I'm pretty sure I got away with doing neither.

No illuminated Bible in our cloister, but Sister Augustine was a master embroiderer and Sister Klara was a master weaver. They made sacral clothing in their workshop and had several students, both. But there were more modern jobs, too. Sister Magdalena was a doctor, Sister Gerhardis a dentist and Sister Benedicta a potter, to name only a few.

The mentality that got stuck somewhen in the early 20th century. I didn't mind that they were all a bit narrow-minded, but they couldn't deal with the fact that I wasn't. A shame, I really liked the lifestyle there, just the right mix of structured and open that I'd prefer in such a community.

Oh. That is a shame. But we're each on our own journey, right? You seem well suited to where you are now....

That's really cool! I'm half tempted myself, but I've not used a sewing machine since I was a teenager. It would almost certainly end up in a cupboard unused.
And yet...

That is a valid concern and the reason why I hesitated, oh, about half a minute before I told Mum what I wanted for my birthday. She cannot give me paid LJ time, after all.

I have one like it - it is remarkably useful and easier to thread than my big Janome one which I have never really got to grips with.

That's a wonderful gift! I'm sure you will have plenty of use for it.

I use the sewing machine at Mom's so rarely that I always have to reteach myself when I do use it, but it's rewarding. And you have had loads of experience, even if years ago, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it again soon enough.

It is cute! Remembering how to use a sewing machine is automatic, like riding a bicycle. Once you have learned on one machine, it is easy to use others. It should speed up your crafting considerably, hand sewing is very time consuming.

Actually, I 'm planning to use it for seaming the pages, mostly. I prefer to sew the small parts by hand. I feel more in control that way. ;)
