Since the theme of our Spring Ball will be Russia, I made some thought about what I should make my colleagues as a gift. Last time I made all those little Japanese bookmark dolls, and they were an overwhelming success.

I came up with the idea of Russian Matryoshka dolls - the ones where you have a smaller doll in the big one and an even smaller one in the second one and so on. Of course, I can't make them of wood (or plastic, which would be blasphemy anyway), but I thought little cardboard ones would be neat. They would open like double cards, and the smaller one would be glued to the right side.

So I sat down this morning and made the templates. I already had something to start with: the template I used for my felt Russian dolls, like these:

Or these:

Or these:

It turned out that the template for these dolls would be just the right size for the middle paper doll. So I used that as a reference when making the templates for the larger and smaller paper dolls. I also started to make an experimental piece; will post a pic when it's done. I'm doing everything I can to postpone the recycled-CD-as-stained-glass-ornament project, it seems. *g*

Yesterday I managed to rewrite the two pages of the new TNG story I was unhappy with a second time. I think the technobabble has been inserted more smoothly now. I even managed to write a couple more pages to this chapter, so I'm tentatively content with my progress.

I also finished two more cork-and-felt ornaments; only two more left to do. Unfortunately, I have zero ideas about any possible design for them. Perhaps prowling around on Pinterest will be helpful.

Mum and I decided to eat outside today. We had to go to the nearby Savoy Park shopping centre anyway, to pay the bills and do some grocery shopping, so we went to Il Treno for some giant crepes. Mum had one with jam, I had one with smoked cheese and ham. It was very yummy. We're still so full up that the rests of the experimental cheesecake I made yesterday will probably have to wait till tomorrow.

I just adore them! I recently spent an enjoyable evening with a friend who was born in Russia, looking up different sets of the dolls on ebay.

I bet they were a lot more professionally made, but I'm quite content with mine, too. :)

I'm really insane, aren't I? And then whine that I don't have the time and peace of mind to write...

I'd love to see your cards when they're finished. They sound great fun.

The first two or three will be, I presume. After that, mass production starts and the fun lessens.

You sound like me. I hate duplicating cards. Could you make two or three different variations, to give yourself some relief?

The card Matryoshka dolls sound lovely. Your felt ones are absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you. Felt is a lot more forgiving than paper, but I hope the paper ones won't turn out too bad, either.

Thanks. :) I imagine I'll be less delighted once the mass production starts. ;)
