wiseheart | What is a quiet book?

Some of you asked in comments to my previous entry, so I hunted down a fairly extensive answer for you. ;))

"The quiet book is quite literally – quiet. It is a book that is made of fabric (typically felt). Each page is focused on a different skill. They are colorful, provide a new platform for learning, and inspire independent play and creativity. These books are great for travel or moments when you might need to keep your child occupied and quiet/focused.

This book is actually great for children of all ages, but is best geared towards children 1-5 years old. The possibilities for page ideas are endless. If you can think it up, it can be created. Here are some of the more popular pages that are included in the typical book:

Color identification/matching
Shape identification/matching
Using snaps, buttons, buckles and zippers
Matching and sorting activities
Spelling words
Counting
Nature/Animal exploration (picking apples, fishing, seasons )
Games (tic tac toe, checkers, memory)

The pages can be as basic or as detailed as your skill level and desired effort. A basic page is constructed of stiffened felt. Felt glue works decently well to hold pieces together, but throwing a basic stitch in will hold up better if you have the time to do so. You will need scissors, thread (if you plan on sewing) or felt glue, and a variety of felt colors. Each page will have its unique detailing; some may require zippers or buttons, while others simply need felt pieces cut out. Felt is a very forgiving fabric, and children won’t notice or care if the page isn’t perfect. Everyone can make these pages- regardless of your skill level."
