The trip to Vienna was as pleasant as it could be with 13 mostly sullen teenagers, who had a hard time to bring up interest for anything else than their phones and the local McDonald's. At least we, adults, had a relatively good time, with lovely weathers and all that.

The thing that managed to impress the kids at least a tiny bit was the "Ankeruhr" clock. We saw this (not my recording, found on YouTube but reasonably good job):

I had little time for myself and made therefore only 3 photos, one of which is the plaque to above mentioned "Ankeruhr" clock, where one can see who the historical figures dancing around actually are:

The other two are from the "Steffl Kirtag", some sort of summer festival around St Stephan's Cathedral. Almost the same as during the Christmas fair, only the stuff they sell is a lot less Christmass-y, and there was also a merry-go-round or two. But the most amazing stall was the one where they sold cheeses - I never saw cheeses of such size and colours!

All in all, it was a good trip, although exhausting like whoa. I've recovered a bit by now, so it's time to make an orange marmalade-filled Hefezopf. *g*

It's great, isn't it? I try to go and watch whenever I happen to be in Vienna.

The sad thing is that by the time school starts those teenagers will say 'sausages' if anyone says the word Vienna in their presence. Because they won't remember even going because they were on their phones the entire time, and will only be able to say they went to McDonald's when asked what they did over the summer. XD

I'm sure they'll also remember how boring the Sissi Museum was (for them anyway). But yeah, what you say is certainly true for quite a few of them. One or two of the girls probably will keep something else, too, but not the majority.

It's so good to hear your trip went well! I visited Vienna way back in 1981 when I was 12. I vaguely remember the highlights like seeing the lipizzaner horses and the sacher torte at the Sacher Hotel. The whole visit was magical.

Hmmm ... the cheeses look good.

Glad you had an okay time. With sulky teenagers ... *lol*

I can think of nothing more challenging than taking teens sightseeing. I've watched groups 'doing' York before.

Vienna is an amazing place! It's got a bit too... urban for my taste, but I still love it. Nowadays I prefer other Austrian cities, though, like Graz, St. Pölten and Krems an der Donau. They are somewhat smaller and kept that unmistakable spirit a lot better.

Thank you. I love going to Austria, even with a bunch of sullen teenagers. :)

I got a card from them today, with all 13 signing it (some of them with little hearts under their names), thanking me for taking the time to go with them and showing them around. Colleague I (their class teacher) says they actually enjoyed themselves.

Oh, they apparently liked the trip - their own way (see above my reply to [livejournal.com profile] mirasaui. They just hid it really well. *g*

Yeah, the basic problem is that they don't have the patience to let the sights affect them. But they'll learn. Well, some of them. Hopefully.

I'd love to be able to visit Austria again sometime again. It would be wonderful to take my daughter.

Drop me a line if you do, and we can meet in Vienna. It is only a three-hour-trip for me by train.

:o) Awww, they don't always show it on the outside at that age, but they truly care about those that take the time to care for them.
