Well, we went to the ball. The program was very good, as expected - as soon as the pictures will be up, I'll post or link a few of them. Mum enjoyed herself more or less; she just found the soprano opera singer too shrill and the drummer trio too loud. That, and it took too long and she said the chair was very hard. Other than that, she liked the experience.

For me, it was considerably less pleasant, as the idiotic colleague who used to give me the silent treatment for some imagined insult was there, too. Since we were close to the same group of people - well, largely - and they get to see me twice a week, that made it a rather lonely evening for me. I understand that they were happy to see her, it just made me feel a bit isolated. Ah, well. I'll be in next Tuesday again.

In any case, we left shortly after 10pm. Mum was very tired, after having sat on that uncomfortable chair for more than 3 hours. It wasn't exactly how I expected her birthday gift to turn out, but there are some things we can't influence.

i'm so sorry. I feel for your Mum on the hard chair. I take a cushion everywhere.

I should have thought of that, too. But she never complained about those same chairs before; I think the program was longer than usual because of the lengthy speeches between the individual productions, and she didn't wander around before the beginning as in other years, so she was subjected to the chairs for too long.
