Our day in Linz
Dec. 12th, 2018 06:45 pm... was eventful, to put it mildly. We crammed as much into those couple of hours as we could - and we could cram in a lot!
Firstly, we visited the Chrismas fair in the Volksgarten. These photos are from the previous year, when we were there on a weekend evening and it was really worth taking pictures. We also had a very nice, hot apple punch, because the weather was cold and slightly rainy. I also ate a Bauernkrapfen with cranberry jam, but it wasn't really fresh. The dougnut, not the jam. We opted against trying Striezel as we can get it in Budapest any day we want and much cheaper. One only has to know the right place.
Then we felt tired and allowed ourselves a café at the Thalia bookshop. After that, we went to see the so-called craft-y fair at the Hauptplatz. As in previous year, we weren't impressed. But it's there, in inner yard of the Hotel Wolfinger, where the annual candle-making takes place. It's for a good purpose; the finished candles are weighed and you pay per gram. That's your contribution to make the world a better place. :)
The Hotel Wolfinger:

The inner courtyard of the hotel, leading up to the candle-making workshop:
That is some wicked paving there; Mum could barely navigate the stones. But we managed it to the workshop, full with children happily making their candles. I asked if an adult would be allowed to give it a try, too, and they graciously let me.
The pots with the hot, liquid beeswax. You need to dip your wick for about 3 seconds, then pull it out and let the wax harden. I forgot that and dipped mine for 5 seconds at every turn, so my candle ended up like a traumatized carrot. The kids - between 6 and 10 - were much better at it.

The finished candles need to dry for a while before they can be decorated. The ones below obviously aren't my work - those are pictures googled from the internet:

The entrance of the workshop (obviously, the picture is mine - you can tell by the poor quality. *g*)

When I was done, the friendly workshop assistant asked me if I wanted to keep my traumatized carrot (my words, not hers). I told her that it might be ugly but it's mine, so of course I'll keep it. I don't love it for its looks, after all. She laughed, I got a sticker, proving that it was beeswax and self-made, I paid the small price and took my carrot with me.
We visited lots of small shops afterward, including a one-euro-shop, where we bought a few funny yet insignificant things, like paper serviettes with cookie recipes on them and suchlike. Alas, the only DVDs I saw in Linz were either outside my interest, or I already had them. We never spent so little money on a day trip before, but it was a lovely day nonetheless.
Unfortunately, our train was massively late due to technical problems. We got home two hours later than expected and were accordingly drained. Still, we enjoyed our trip greatly.

Date: 2018-12-12 06:08 pm (UTC)Göttingen sounds like a friendly town for people who cannot wear high heels, like me. We could always presume that it's the fault of the streets... ;)
