I met a former colleague - retired half a year ago - in the same Stühmer Café we had visited with Mum the day before yesterday. The café was half-deserted, although people came in all the time to buy Christmas tree candies. I bought a selection for Mum, too, although I prefer to make my own ones. But she was so enchanted by the copious offer that I thought she'd be happy to have them.

Ilonka ad I then had the world's best hot chocolate - she with cardamom and I with ginger - and then we went to her place, which I've never seen before. It turned out that she lives next door to the café. I never knew. But again, we never had the time to socialize since they'd moved there. We worked in the opposite shifts during the last years. Well, retirement makes many things that were impossible before and option now. As another colleague said just today: What fun! We'll finally have the time to visit each other! (She's going to retire at the end of the term.)

Then I went to choir practice and we practiced the Hallelujah chorus from Händel's Messias. Dan Vasc still sings it better as a one-man choir than our entire bunch counted together. But we're getting there. Eventually. We still have nine days to the concert. *fingers crossed*

According to Ilonka, it was. It was also so thick that you had to eat it with a spoon; well, one could drink it, but it wasn't half the fun that way.

I've never tried hot chocolate with ginger, I'll have to give that a try! Still have half a ginger root laying around and slowly drying out so might as well..

I'm glad you got to enjoy your first proper day of retirement.

TBH, the chocolate was so rich I didn't actually feel the ginger at all. Next time I might try the cardamom or the cinnamon version, perhaps those come through better. Or the chili one.

Chili! Yessss try the chili

Maybe there wasn't enough ginger in it? I'm usually fine making ginger tea but I do need to use a lot and let its stew a while for the tea to really taste of ginger.

Cardamon would be fun, too. I... need to find my cardamon. I know I have a package but I couldn't find it when I made coffee with spices recently.

Next time I'll try the cardamon, perhaps it's more aggressive than ginger. If they used dried, powdered ginger then it wouldn't have a chance against the sinfully rich chocolate.

True, and they probably would since that's easier and doesn't leave chunks. I chop fresh ginger root into fine slices/pieces for ginger tea.

Absolutely! We're planning to repeat the experience on a semi-regular basis, now that we finally have the time for it. And she needs to get out more - she's a cage dweller of the worst sort. Her daughters always tell her to go out, but she says that it isn't any fun alone, which I can understand.
