... which is great news in itself, but those 29 days promise to be really stressful.

Starting with the fact that we don't have gas in the flat, haven't had any since yesterday and won't have it back until next frigging Wednesday! Meaning we'll spent altogether 10 days without being able to cook or even make coffee.

They promised to give it back by this Friday, which is the day till which we have pre-cooked meals, meant to be warmed up in the tiny little grill/toaster thingy. We have a gas oven in the kitchen and no microwave, nor an electric coffee maker. *sigh*

We could go and eat somewhere on other days than just Sunday. But, and that's the second source of utter joy, I work in a permanent afternoon shift, meaning that I leave home around 11 o'clock and don't get back before 6 pm. Also, we'll have to work on Saturday this week, too, so another chance to eat outside is gone.

I'll have to take Mum to the eye doctor (what's the correct English word for that?) on Thursday. We've got an appointment at 9am. I'll have to be at work by midday, and the doctor's practice is on the other end of the city. Budapest is a frigging large city, so we need at least an hour and a half to get there. So I might have to leave her alone if the visit takes too long, and she'll have to take a taxi to get home. Not a cheap adventure.

These are the joys of this week only. And only those I already know of. I'm sure I'll have such "lovely" surprises for the rest of my working days, too.

Shit! Does the gas power your heating too? Perhaps grab a cheap electric kettle (being British means having one of these things is compulsory.) It's no consolation but with a kettle you can have instant coffee, instant soup and hottish couscous. Just like a skanky student. :/

When the gas returns, the kettle can be for tea.

I do have an electric kettle, yes. So we're living on instant coffee *shudder*, instant soup, toasted sandwiches and whatever we can heat up in the toaster/grill thingy.

Fortunately, we've got central heating - such as it is. I just can't understand how could the Gaswerke leave a ten-storey house with 110 flats leave without sensible means of cooking for 10 frigging days! 110 flats mean at least 300 people inconvenienced - and all that because they're running a security check on the gas pipes and ovens. Which, admittedly, is necessary and in our best interest, but why can't they give the gas back earlier when the whole check has already run its cycle today I fail to understand.

In the UK you can ask for compensation. It's usually not much, and it's only given if you grumble - you're caring for an elderly mother, she needs proper food. Is it possible to claim some sort of compensation?

Ten days? That is terrible.

An eye doctor is an ophthalmologist by the way.

Thanks. And yeah, it sucks, but there's nothing we can do.

Eeep! Can you get hold of one of those little gas canister burners? We have them in the camping shops in the UK. It would at least allow you to boil a pan of water to make coffee.

I've got an electric kettle. A small one, but we can make instant coffee and instant soup - both of which I hate with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

That's crazy that they can leave you without gas for so long.

eye doctor is fine. But officially, the kind that most people see for glasses and etc is the optometrist, and the kind that you go to for bigger problems is the medical doctor- ophthalmologist.

Thank you. I fear I'll stick with the eye doctor, then. The other is too complicated spelling-wise, especially when my brain only works with a quarter power.

A lot of people do that because they are hard to spell, and very easy to mix up which is which.

How very inconvenient for you. If your Mum is just going for a check up and glasses its an optician she's seeing. If it's at a hospital, it's an eye specialist.

Thank goodness you don't need the gas for heating, only cooking. Even so, ten days is a long time.

Especially as they only said five days at first, and we've only prepared for five days!
