60 days left - with a baking disaster
Oct. 6th, 2018 08:55 pmI said yesterday I'd try my hand on the Opera cake, right? And I promised pics, no matter what. Well, I'm a woman of my word, so here are the world's clumsiest, most shapeless Opera cakes:

The main problem was that I don't have the right size baking tins and had to bake my almond sponge cake in one big tin. Which was still not big enough, resulting in the sponge cake turning out too thick. The layers are supposed to be 5mm thick, tops, mine are at least 1 cm.
I also totally axed my coffee buttercream, so I had to use every trick up my sleeve to make it work. So the consistency isn't what it was supposed to be. And my chocolate ganache is way too thick as well.
It still tastes amazing, although ungodly rich, so I might give away some of it before we both get sick from it. Besides, it makes our neighbours happy.
Did you ever have any particular baking disasters?
Other than that, I watched Zuhause im Glück and a re-run of the Buffy episode in which Giles is turned into a demon by Ethan Rayne. Spike was amazing in that one; all the sarcasm!

The Opera cake still looks delicious, though and I'm glad it tastes just as good. Giving some away sounds definitely like a good idea, though. Nothing like having a cake you love and getting sick of it.

Date: 2018-10-07 02:21 pm (UTC)The most memorable baking disaster I can remember being involved in was when my father, my brother, my sister and I were making a birthday cake for my mother. Measured everything etc, put cake into the oven - then when it didn't seem to be baking properly, realised we had forgotten to put any flour in it! It was certainly not a cake, but it was still tasty....
